Fashion Week trend: voluptuous models

Don't let the title of this post fool you. Size 0 still reigns supreme on the catwalk during Olympus Fashion Week in New York.

But Gottex, an Israeli swimwear designer, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a racy fashion show featuring downright baroque-sized models. (At least the model on the left -- the one on the right still needs to eat a sandwich!) The swimwear featured everything from jewel-crusted bandeaux tops to appliqued orchids on stretch sheer fabric. Elaborate, glamorous and luxurious, the swimsuits seemed more appropriate for pool lounging than for lap swimming. But who wants to think about swimming laps in September anyway?

I think we need to get more full figured models in the swimwear department, there really are not that many around.

the weight debate is raging this year, with Madrid saying no to skinny and Australia nixing anyone over a sample size.
PS thinking about swimming laps in September is what we do in the industry. The same way we think about knits in the spring.

most swimwear you see these days isn't for swimming. it's for looking sexy in at someone's NIGHTtime pool party. and the fashion world is always a season ahead to get you thinking a season ahead. what's wrong with the here and now?

as for skinny vs "average" sized models. as a short (5'3), skinny (112lbs) person, i've spent my ENTIRE life being hated on by fat bitches who wouldn't put down the bon bons, turn off oprah and go for a walk. and now, in my safe haven of the fashion world, i'm get slammed for being something that not even post pregancy body changes can change: SKINNY! i hope all of the ppl out there that see this new trend towards hiring "plus sized"/"average sized" models will remember that there are some of us out there who have just as hard of a time finding reasonable clothes as fat ppl do b/c of our genetics and the fact that we take pride in taking care of ourselves.

*WARNING* Extreme sarcasm ahead

Devynn,
As a "fat bitch", I applaud your genitics that make you skinny. I mean, just because most of the women in my family are overweight, does not mean that I should have the audacity to show my face in public. I should just stop worrying about getting my college degree and just work out all day, because that is what it would take for me to be considered skinny by your standards. Granted, I've been lazy about it the last few months. I won't deny it. But, even when I did work out on a regular basis, the smallest I got was a size 18. In fact, I think I would look stupid at a size any smaller than a 12 and that's pushing it. Don't expect me to weep for you because you have a hard time finding something to wear. At least the media hasn't been telling you your whole life that because of your weight, you don't matter and that if you want to matter, you better lose weight. At least you don't think you need to starve yourself to death. Because, that's exactly what many women do. They starve themselves to look like the skeletons on the catwalk. You're exactly the type of person who promotes this behavior. I guess us big women do not deserve to have models wearing clothes that actually fit us and are not a mumu. I guess we should not be able to look professional or sexy or fun.

No thats not the problem because you are skinny. The fashion industry have pushed the beening skinny on everyone. Making if you wasn't skinny then there something wrong with you. There are women/girls out there doing some very stupid things to be this image. There bodies have paid the price for it some have DIED even the models who are skinny have paid heavy price too. When the models cannot maintain this image they thrown to the side like trash Some just can't be Size 0 its in the genetics.

Myself I don't want some 95 pound women I want women that has some meat on her bones not a tooth pick showing there bones off. This is suppost to be sexy a women with some curves is sexy. Paris Hilton isn't sexy too me she not that hot looking. Everyone goes goo goo over her because of her money.

#4 you don't sound skinny. My youngest daughter is is 5'3" weighs 110 and looks absolutely amazing! She has a great figure, wears a size 5, and nothing looks bad on her, but she's not skinny in the way these models are. Of course, she's still growing, everyone in our family is relatively tall, I'm 5'7 and weigh 125, wear a size 8, I'm not skinny either, but I love the way my clothes look.

I think it's great to see normal-sized women modeling swimwear. Most women who purchase swimwear are not rail thin so it gives us a chance to see what the garment will actually look like on us. Now if only fashion catalogs would feature normal-sized women...

RE: POST#4 FROM DEVYNN

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE, 5'3"? 112LBS. I WOULD SAY YOU ARE ON THE BOARD LINE. NOT SKINNY I WOULD SAY JUST RIGHT FOR THE HIGHT.
MAYBE THE FAT B*** LIKE YOU SAID, ARE TIRED TO HEAR FROM SKINNY B*** HOW GOOD THEY LOOK/HOW SEXY/HOW MIGHTY THEY ARE. BODY SIZES AND SHAPES THERE IS A LOT TO DO WITH GENES/CULTURE/AND OF COURSE WITH DIET CHOICES, BUT WE CAN NOT IGNORE THAT ALSO SOME OF US MAY HAVE ALSO GLANDS DISFUCTIONS WICH CAN CAUSE EXCESSO WEIGHT OR VERY LOW WEIGHT WICH A ULTRA SKINNY PERSON IS A UGLY AS A MORBID HEAVY PERSON IS.aND AGAIN SOME OF US JUST PRAISE MORE BRAINS THEN BODY...

Whoa, hold up there Devynn. That's a pretty one track mind you got there! Just as genetics and playing the health card might be on your side for staying thin, doesn't mean that it works for all heavier people too. Genetics and medical issues can keep someone who works their butts off, eats healthy and lives a fast pace life from being supermodel thin. How do I know this, my sister and myself are like this. While I am a size 2 and eat like a pig all the time, my sister is a strict vegan, rigorously works out 2 hours or more everyday and no matter what she does she cannot get below a size 12. Even though she has religiously done this for years, she has only lost about 30 lbs. Metabolism, genetics, age & medical conditions all play the greatest roll in how "thin" or not so "thin" we are. Laziness is fractional part of the overweight problem. But to flat out call all heavy people fat "bitches" and presumably paternally lazy is biased. You wouldn't like me calling you a skinny anorexic "bitch" who needs to eat more if you wouldn't physically be able help how thin you were even if you ate a horse a cow and pig all in the same day everyday. How fair would that be?

Right on, Devynn. I couldn't agree with you more. I'm 5'10", 110 lbs and it's impossible to find clothes that fit right unless I buy the most expensive brands. I get so sick of hearing people on t.v. talk about how "real women" have curves... What the hell does that make me, then? I have always had a body like this - it's just how I am, no matter how much I eat and I love it. I also kind of like the fact that skinny girls are getting more attention now and are being seen as beautiful. The skinny look is IN and it's about time!!

Im another slim figured person and yes fat women do like to complain and when i say fat i mean love handles a rounded stomach with stretch marks etc. jessica simpson is considered voluptous yet she has slim legs and a slim stomach as long as you have breast or hips or a big rear. (not all 2 then ur fat ) so fat women you are not voluptous or curvy especially when some of you are just wide with absolutely no shape so keep wearing your foundations. and by the way birth control makes u gain weight because it tricks your body into assuming ur pregnant thats why u cant get pregnant duh. so if i feel like being fat ill do like toccara and in two months be plus sized.

Thank you Sharon O. I was waiting for someone to say that. Hello ladies, they're just men. Not that important. We validate them not the other way around.(no matter what we look like) As a person pushing fifty, I've come to learn that it doesn't matter what you look like. The men will always want what they want (if you know what I mean) They really don't care as much as we do.
