Joining up with Claudia Schiffer and the governments of Madrid, Milan and Rome, designer Giorgio Armani has spoken out against super-skinny models in the fashion industry. Armani is the first designer who to suggest that the industry's preoccupation with thinness has spiraled out of control. Urging other designers to follow suit, Armani made the point that he has never favored the size 0 models in his runway shows. Armani also suggested that a number of designers are exploiting super-skinny models in order provoke attention from the media. Surely Armani's stance on this topic will draw some heat from other designers. Karl Lagerfeld, for instance, has all but laughed off the skinny model bans by suggesting that models have skinny bones, not eating disorders. But after the recent death of Luisel Ramos during London Fashion Week, it is refreshing to see a designer step up and take responsibility for the detrimental effects of the industry.
