Marriage is out of fashion in France

In equal measure to the way they have held on to their cigarettes, young people in France have begun to reject traditional marriage. According to an article in the Washington Post, marriage has been in decline for a generation across much of northern Europe, from France to Scandinavia. Sociologists have described the trend as a "soft-culture revolution," which is a dramatic way of saying that young France is rejecting the traditional expectations of old France. With the Catholic Church's diminished role in French life, migration to dense urban centers, and overall sense of freedom when it comes to lifestyle choices, the French are no longer choosing to say "I do." And even though populations and birthrates have increased over the past generation, French marriages have decreased by 30 percent.

Who would be surprised about this, the French have lost their way
long ago.
Another fifty years they will be a province of Iran or maybe Lebanon.
Good, thet deserve it.

How very sad. It seems the French are committing cultural suicide, as their population has increased due to African immigrants, and their birthrate is not at replacement level.

Birthrates are up, huh? So I guess this puts a hole in the religious right's ridiculous claim that if "family" means more than one-man-one-woman-married-before-they-have-any-sex-raising-children, society will be destroyed.

So, with an increasing birthrate and fewer marriages, the French population is becoming more and more what we already thought they were. An eight-letter word that starts with BA and ends with DS.

Obviously, in a few more generations to come, there will be very few native French of the White race any longer and the ones who are left will probably be inclined to have mulatto children. The White race seems to be dying out in Europe, slowly but surely. Most people of color in France still believe in traditional marriage and their population is booming. It's a shame that even civil unions without religious ceremony is cast aside as an option for these French young adults of reproductive age. Traditional marriage has always been something to look forward to, like a fairy-tale ending. They don't know what they are missing out on.

Amazing that everything is coming true that my father predicted. The breakdown of the traditional family is what is eroding every organization in the world. What do we do?? Very sad that we feel powerless ness?

JeanMaire - you make it sound like having "mulatto" children is a bad thing. I would love to know what is wrong with having biracial children. Does the whole world need to be purebred...just like dogs? Will the country just go to shit if the "white race" has diminished? Will you, your friends, or your family be harmed in any way if this happens? Yeah, I think not. Did you ever think that maybe some of the people that are still committing to marriage are in interracial relationships? Obviously that didn't cross your mind either. But of course, you must have either conducted or read that study because you know that the "colored" people are the only ones to get married. You're such a smart one...and not racist at all. Nope. Maybe next time, you should think a little bit before you write. Hmmm?? I hope you aren't telling your wonderful thoughts to your children. God help them and the rest of this world if you are.

Why do some of the above posters seem so concerned with the survival of the white race in France and the rest of Europe? That sounds like some of the most bigoted, racist thinking I've ever heard.

It's mere ignorance to consider that "color" or the term "African" or as one might label "mullato children" are the focus of this article... the truth of the matter is never a matter of "race" of one kind or another, but rather a matter of ingnorance. For lack of a better term... "selfishness" might be the over all word that has infected society... or "lack of integrity" ... even perhaps "lack of morals" might better define this decline in the choice to marry than to place blame on the color of who might be responsible. Isn't it safe to say that it isn't just France that has experienced the loss of family unit? It's everywhere... look around you, on your own street... count the homes of the single parents and the children who know nothing more than a one parent home... and that one active parent is too busy working for the entire families survival... while the missing parent moves to the next broken family to reject the womans children as their own - while abandoning their own flesh and blood. This is not just France ... this is EVERYWHERE - including all countries and races. Meanwhile... after experiencing the rejection of my children to many of men who did not find "reason" to love them... I've observed Monkeys...exhibiting more dedication and attention to their offspring then some human beings do. This recognition of the statistical decline of marriage in France is simply the acceptance of failure for the first time family...that realizes that you can't FIX what has already been broken. American's have this false belief that if they try again (marriage) ... they can fix or replace the little broken hearts involved. Wouldn't it be best to say... commitment is difficult to find everywhere? Wouldn't it be better to write and article that might encourage "people" in general to see the truth? Rather then headline your article to present a subliminal message for an okay to a trendset that resulted from a lack of integrity that exists in all cultures? Human beings... although given the ability to use the power to reason and protect his own flesh and blood has abandoned that choice. Simple as that. Quite sad. So let's leave off the "racial aspect" and just face the facts here... it takes a strong commitment and alot of love and dedication to raise a family - and obviously that's not a choice that alot of men and women are willing to make these days... simply put. Selfishness has infected our society... to a point that most are so focused upon themselves that they don't even know how ate up they are until it's destroyed the entire family unit. Quite sad to say the least.

OH... and by the way... I'm not "colored" either... I'm not married to a black man... I'm not married to anyone. I'm WHITE, you know caucasion... an intelligent female as well... and it sickens me when EVER I hear a pale face make derogatory comments regarding the "black race" in fact it literally disgusts me to think that we still have such mindless, ignorant people who dare to make such pitiful comments with regard to mixed races... as if they are better then another color. It's people like you that embarrass me when I'm mingling with respectable, thoughtful, loving, kind, generous and intelligent African American human beings who have to read those pathetic opinions. I can only hope that when all of our people read that kind of crap... they know that it does not represent all "White skin" people!

Perhaps when JeanMaire spoke of white race, what was actually meant was Western values. I would agree that Western values are declining as people from other countries who do not share them are inundating Europe. This is very sad. When you consider the Christian origins of Europe, it is REALLY sad, and a little frightening. I think the Europeans are rejecting the Christian values that made them great nations at one time.

When there is not God, one is subject to the arbitrary whims of men.

Many people today do not believe in the rules and regulations of the Catholic Church. My family is Catholic. I have a Brother who has six kids and no life to speak of. He has been dubbed clinically depressed by Doctors and receives SS. He became depressed after marriage and has been that way for 33 years. He didn't seem to be depressed before he got married and had six kids. He's alot older than me and I wouldn't want any part of his life for anything. I personally believe he became depressed when they starting having kids because he gave up the things he loved to do in order to follow the rules of the church meaning no birth control. He is miserable because of the way his life has turned out.

The original peoples of Europe are volunteering for their own extinction. I believe this is the first time this has happened in world history. It reminds me of the mad swine in the Bible story who were possessed and all voluntarily jumped off a cliff and perished. Something is terribly wrong.

I really enjoy the irony of the above poster getting disgusted when 'pale faces' demean 'respectable, thoughtful, loving, kind, generous and intelligent African American human beings.' Let's all just sit and reflect on that, and see if we can't regress into a pack of uncontrollably-giggling hyenas.

Selfish? You know what is selfish? Thinking that you are so special that there is some great, big wish-granter up in the sky that has nothing better to do with it's time than to listen to your whining. I love it when some overweight, middle-aged woman says that "God" saved her overweight, middle-aged husband from a heart attack. Meanwhile, "God" allows 9 year old girls in Calcutta to be sold for sex. I guess "God" doesn't listen to their prayers. Getting married to please "God" or society or whoever is insane and just the thing morons in the U.S would do. Then again, as the bible-thumpers have shown us so many times, all you have to do is get married and then go out and have sex with young boys or whatever it is they like to do. They don't care about marriage anymore then anyone else, they're just bigger hyprocrites. Name 3 happily married couples. I bet you can't do it. All the married people I know are miserable and if I had a dime for everytime a married man told me how his wife doesn't "understand" him, I'd be the richest woman in the world. Before we start acting like we are better than the French AGAIN, perhaps we should take a look at our own sorry actions.

I know of at least 6 couples that are very happy in their marriages (not including my own). I guess we travel in packs! These are not mere acquaintances, but people I have known for at least a decade and am close friends with.

It is amazing the mindset of people that have been divorced. My husband broke his leg and could not work for a few months. A few of the people that have been through divorces said I should divorce my hubby. Unbelievable! The wedding vows state "in sickness and health" and "for richer or poorer". He had a broken leg and could not work because his job is physically demanding. I had been with this man for over 18 years, and he has always held a job.

I think that people who divorce should realize they are not cut out for marriage and not keep trying. I think it is totally disgusting that when people do divorce one of the partners will leave their children to rot, while they go out and get (or create) a new family. I truly believe that when a couple has children, BOTH parents should care for those children. I do not think either parent has the right to go out an create more children without taking care of their existing children.

I do have a child that I adore, and can not ever imagine abandoning him. Even in the event of a divorce.
