Seven Days of Style: Give the Gift of Green

12/5/2006 7:01PM by Sarah J. Gim

green giftsSo, you're trying to tread a little more lightly on the land. You recycle all your plastic bottles and soda cans. You drive a hybrid car. You even power your cell phone with a solar cell. Good for you! But for the Holidays, you can't go back on all the good work you've done by gifting others with the same old stuff that tromps all over the environment. You can give green, and thankfully, giving green doesn't mean you have to fork over a wad of cash, and neither does it mean it has to be ugly hemp sandals. Styledash has seven ways (+1) for you to give the gift of green this season.

Sunday - Every year, you give Dad something classy for his liquor cabinet. Instead of another bottle of Glenlivet 25, why not try a bottle of Square One Vodka. It'll make a sophisticated martini a la James Bond, but is a double agent because it's organic.

Monday - Mom, like you, is a Beauty Queen, so give her "clean" products to clean her hair. Simply Organic makes shampoos and conditioners that are good for her hair, and good for the air. And it's not like you're getting her Pert from the drugstore. These are luxuries at $60.

Tuesday
- The best thing for in-laws is a gift basket, but how many summer sausages and vacuum-packed cheese logs can one house have? Give them a basket of locally-, organically-grown apples in a basket made from reclaimed root wood from VivaTerra.

Wednesday - You can't avoid the sweater at Christmas, can you? You can! Give your sister this long-sleeve t-shirt from Butta, which comes in three fabric options, one of which is bamboo, and we know how good bamboo is!

Thursday - Your weird brother is the hardest one to shop for, but you can't really go wrong with music. Rhythms Del Mundo is a compilation of music by the likes of Coldplay, U2, Franz Ferdinand, and Dido & Faithless that has been redone with a Latin flavor. Proceeds from the sale of the CD go toward raising awareness for natural disaster relief and climate change.

Friday - For your Boy, the Fan Belt from English Retreads is awesome because not only is it a good-looking belt, but it's made from recycled tires.

Saturday - Your best girlfriend is a bag whore, but you certainly can't afford to go and blow $2000 on a designer handbag. The Socorro Shoulder Bag is made from recycled pull tabs from soda cans that have been crocheted together. The look is one-of-a-kind.

Last, but not least, get a little something for yourself. At only $6.95 each, the Garden in a Bag is a good way to put some oxygen back into all that air you're sucking up.
