Blipster: NY Times most recent desperate attempt at being cool
Yesterday the NY Times released an incredibly stupid article about black people who listen to rock music, labeling this oh-so-mysterious group of intrepid racial trendsetters "blipsters." Come on, as if we needed to subdivide an already overly-scrutinized group of people with a label based on race. Most of the Times' attempts at relevancy are scoffed at, but this feels just a little bit like racial profiling, and media pundits from all corners of the Internet are understandably pissed.Gawker's "Ghetto Pass" corespondent, "The Assimilated Negro" ripped the piece apart in a post dripping with sarcasm. Gothamist, another popular NYC-based blog writes "We think perhaps The Times felt like hyping up a new phrase, and didn't think too much about the rest." Colonel K Speaks slams the article, repeatedly, taking issue with the seemingly endless string of thoughtless comments by Jessica Pressler, the piece's writer. And over 100 commenters at Brooklyn Vegan lashed out against the asinine article, calling it "completely racist," and mockingly suggesting that, therefore, maybe Jewish hipsters should be called..."Jewsters"? Or would that be "Jipsters"?
Way to go, NYT.
