Just how curvy is America Ferrara?

There's been much talk about America Ferrara as a good example of a curvy woman. After all, the star of Ugly Betty did make a movie called "Real Women Have Curves." The purple Brian Reyes gown that she wore for at the Golden Globes was cited as a fine example of a dress for a larger woman. But just how large is America Ferrara?

The dress is currently up for auction through Clothes Off Our Backs, a great charity that auctions off celebrity items for various causes. The size? America is a size six. Smaller than Meryl Streep, whose Carolina Herrera dress also up for auction, is a size eight. I love Ugly Betty and I think America Ferrara is a very charming actress but I bristle when I see her used as an example of a plus-sized or even fuller figured woman.

In response to the previous comment, "Curvey" does not necessarily mean "big".

Curvy is not always mean big. Big doesn't always curvey. Marilyn Monroe was big and curvey. She wore a size 14 dress that revealed her curves. Don't confuse the words.

Yep, marilyn was indeed a size 14. If you tried to pass a size 14 off today as sexy...oh, sorry, i mean 'cuuurrvyyyy'...you'd probably be thought of as crazy. I can't believe America is a size 6, yet is allowed to exemplify America's larger women. Yeah, that definately explains why my teen daughter won't eat because she's a size 9. :::sigh:::

I dont think that they meant big and curvy are the same thing, but if you ever saw the movie real women have curves you would definately see she was not a size six there

the AVERAGE american woman is a FAT size 12, no curves really to speak of, just FAT and she's about 5'7. i don't know how tall america ferrara is, but she has CURVES. there is a distinct, well rounded difference between her chest and hips. they don't BONE out, like they would on a skinny girl, they CURVE out. any FAT on her is a healthy portion (your average woman needs 10% body fat for all her insides to work properly). so all you FAT girls out there need to find someone else who's FAT to look up to. rosie o'donnell and monique are two women in hollywood doing it up PROUDLY for the fat girls.

another thing to keep in mind: every designer uses different measurements to size their clothes. and height does make a difference in your sizes. christina aguileria, shakria and toni braxton are all UNDER 5'5, but depending on the designer would wear anything from a size 0-8. most women OVER 5'5 START wearing size 6-8. but then you have to add in things like petite's and tall's. something the author DID not tell us about. that size six may be a petite. so how about sharing ALL the info you can find before slamming an actress for not fitting into your definition of fat or not.

and to those that care, i'm a size 4. with curves. at 5'3. and society calls me skinny. hate on that!

Height is also a factor in curvey. Shorter stature increases visual impact.

If size 6 is their idea of a large woman, no wonder teenage girls have such idenity problems. Get with reality people not all women are size 6 and we are not all large

I'm pretty sure that a size 14 dress in Marilyn Monroe days was more like a 6 or 8 dress today.... some designers are making clothes bigger but putting the smaller sizes on them...to cater to our increasing body weights and sizes!!!

She looks lovely - but size 6 - I don't think so. AND nothing wrong with that - I would guess size 12 to be more accurate. The number doesn't matter - she looks healthy, happy and fabulous!

In response to Dan, Marilyn Monroe was absolutely NOT big. Just as an FYI, a size 14 in 1960 is not the equivalent of a size 14 today. It is quite wrong to perpetuate the myth that she was a fat woman. Here's some facts about Ms. Monroe:

Height: 5 feet, 5½ inches
Weight: 118-140 pounds
Bust: 35-37 inches
Waist: 22-23 inches
Hips: 35-36 inches
Bra size: 36D

In terms of today's standards, it is important to point out that although Elizabeth Hurley is a bit taller than Marilyn Monroe, her measurements and weight are the same. I don't think Liz Hurley is big either.

But what's her height? If she's only 5 feet, it's totally possible for her to be a six. A size 4 5' woman will be a lot curvier than a size 4 5'6" woman, for example.

I guess I would like to know, how tall is Ms. Ferrara? While I agree that she is not now either full figured or plus sized, it makes a big difference if she is 5'-5'2" and a size 6 or 5'6"-5'8" and a size 6. As I remember Meryl is a rather tall woman who at a size 8 would be considered thin.

What ever Ms. Ferrara's height and size she is doing a wonderful job playing "Ugly Betty" and I hope she keeps up the good work.

In response to Heather's comment, how do you make a blatant statement that she's not a size 6? Every size 6 does not look exactly the same. You have to look at height, bone structure, etc. You hav to take into account the comment made by someone else that designers have different sizes for the clothing, so something in a size 6 in one designer's line may be a size 10 in another designer's line. So, while it may be true that she may NOT be a size 6, it's not fair to imply that someone was lying. Her body may or may not be a size 6, but the dress, in fact, may be a size 6.

A size six, my goodness. I would consider that a small size. She is not a plus size woman, well, maybe in Hollywood where most women look like they are dying of starvation. Get real, real beauty is in the curves, or have we forgotten that we are women? I love "Ugly Betty" and America Ferrara.
