This Valentine's Day, think globally!
In the past, Valentine's Day has been all about the excessive and the superfluous. Let's face it, none of us actually need that heart-shaped Whitman's Sampler, but we all want it just the same. (I take that back -- Whitman's chocolate tastes like wax.)
Given the state of affairs around the planet (wars, oil dependency, global warming, instability in countless nations), I'd like to encourage people to celebrate this Valentine's Day in a way that lets your sweetie know that he or she makes you want to do something good for the place we all call home.
To make things easier, I've come up with five great alternative Valentine's Day gifts that show your main squeeze that your love abounds.
1. Buy local flowers. Sure, roses are the old standard, but unless you live in an area with a balmy winter, those flowers had to travel -- probably by plane. As you may know, planes generate tons of carbon emissions, which isn't good for anyone. Add to that non-biodegradable packaging and you've basically given the gift that wilts, but never goes away. Local flowers on the other hand, minimize transportation pollution. You can also ask your florist to put the flowers in a re-usable vase or recycled paper.
2. Buy titanium. Diamonds and gold might seem like they are the way to go, but sometimes that beautiful bling comes at the expense of the other's misery. Even conflict diamonds and recycled can gold can have dubious histories, so if you want to give jewelry, give titanium. It's beautiful, strong and thankfully, made in the laboratory.
3. Buy a massage. Everyone loves receiving massages, so save yourself the effort of having to dwell on sizes and whether he or she will like the gift and just buy a spa gift certificate. If you're really feeling the love, buy the massage from a locally owned spa. Sure Bliss and Aveda give great service, but so do the independent shops in your town and they could probably use the business.
4. Cook an earth-friendly meal. Nothing is more sensual and romantic than a delicious home-cooked meal made from high-quality ingredients. Try to buy ingredients that are as fresh as possible. Hit your local bakery for breads and desserts, and check out what your grocery store carries in terms of local, organic produce.
5. Donate to a charity. Giving money to a charity might sound like a crappy gift to receive, but the truth is that there is no greater way to express how your honey inspires you than to give to others. But if you think this gift might land you in the dog house, you could also donate to charity by purchasing one of the many items from the Project (Red) campaign.
