Drugstore Beauty Queen: Revlon ColorStay Makeup

revlon colorstay makeup with softflesSo I took a little break in my week-long coverage of drugstore brand foundations and makeups. Can you blame me? I had to go out any buy a couple more and give myself time to try them!

Today, we're trying Revlon ColorStay Makeup with SoftFlex, which is one of two foundations in the ColorStay line. The ColorStay line is supposed to be just that: all the products are purported to not only stay in one place, i.e. lipsticks don't bleed into line around your mouth or smudge off, but the color is supposed to last for up to 16 hours. For a lot of people who don't have the time or energy to constantly reapply throughout the day, that's an attractive feature, but to me, it sounds a little scary. It sounds permanent. It sounds like it's a pigment dye. What if I make a mistake?

Now even though we're in a drugstore, Revlon happens to be one of the more expensive drugstore brands, up there with L'oreal and Neutrogena cosmetics. The ColorStay foundation was $12.99 at my local drugstore. It's also available for $11.69 at drugstore.com.

Color: Of course, I had to go with the lightest shade, because even though we've hit more daylight hours on the clock, I wear SPF all over that's the equivalent of wearing a haz-mat suit. Unfortunately, I spent almost $12 for the lightest shade and it was still wrong. Revlon foundation shades are definitely made for Caucasian women who tend to have a more pinkish undertone. On a yellowish undertone like my skin, the pinkness of the foundation was very pronounced. Fortunately, my very light white powder helped.

Also, you have to work fast, or else the color sets in before you finish and you will end up with slightly odd streaks.

Coverage: Though the color wasn't right, the coverage was good. ColorStay makeup is a medium coverage, which is something I prefer (I actually prefer super heavy coverage, but will never fnd that unless I go to a department store/studio brand). The makeup stays true to its name, that it stays in place, but it still was't the kind of coverage I wanted. If you like lighter coverage, this makeup will work, even though it sells itself as "medium."

Overall, I wouldn't buy this makeup again, especially since it's almost double the price of the other drugstore brands. Now I don't know what to do with an almost full bottle of the stuff.

Other foundations:
L'oreal True Match Foundation
Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse
CoverGirl Clean Makeup
