Good news for Plum Sykes!
I like Henry James; I can roll with Jonathan Franzen. But as much as I like the entrancing prose of American male authors, I still have a major soft spot for chick-lit. Haters say it's mind-rotting fluff (yes I mean you, Maureen Dowd!), but I don't buy it for a second. Really, there are few literary pleasures I enjoy as much as zoning out with a Sophie Kinsella novel.
Though I can't say I've read Plum Sykes' Bergdorf Blondes, I'm pleased to hear that she has been approached by HBO to create a screenplay of her fiction debut. Sykes, who's considered Anna Wintour's protege, fashioned Bergdorf Blondes in the tradition of Sex and the City -- fast-talking, high-heel wearing New York ladies with men and money on their minds.
Granted, Bergdorf Blondes: the HBO version won't be another Empire Falls, but just as there's a place on my shelf for Shopaholic, there's a spot in my Netflix queue for Plum Sykes.
