There's been a rash of celebrity-designed labels lately. It seems that anyone who's made a couple movies, or been in a few magazines, or recorded a pop album is therefore qualified to create a clothing line for an international retailer like H&M.
The problem, is that these people aren't designers, and, subsequently, their clothes aren't very good. In spite of all the hype surrounding launches by Madonna, Kate Moss and others, their clothes are showing up on eBay and clearance racks after the public's less-than-enthusiastic reaction.
According to some in the fashion industry, this reliance on celebrity culture to market poorly-designed items means people get treated "like cattle," instead of customers. This flies in the face of designers who are diligently working and re-working their creations to better meet the needs of the people who will eventually wear their clothes.
I agree. I don't care who makes the clothes I wear -- as long as they're created with sense of passion and vision. But just because you love clothes, or you look good in them, doesn't mean you should be designing them.
