Fashion designer Gianfranco Ferre has died

6/17/2007 2:51PM by Deidre Woollard

Another sad day for fashion, the Italian designer Gianfranco Ferre has died at the age of 62. Ferre had suffered a massive brain hemorrhage on Friday and died in the hospital in Milan on Sunday night. Ferre was known as the architect of fashion, due in part to the degree in architecture he had from Milan's Polytechnic Institute but also because of the clean and uncomplicated lines of his clothing. He started his own company in the mid-1970s and was tapped to be the designer for Christian Dior in the late 1980s. He stayed at Dior until 1996. He sold his Gianfranco Ferre line in 2002, but remained as the creative director for the line. The spring-summer 2008 menswear collection is scheduled to be presented next week in Milan.
