When did J. Crew become high-end?

I am not a J. Crew shopper but I have found myself stopping in about once a year to check out a piece I might have seen on a fashion blog or magazine. Each time I have gone in, I've noticed that the prices were inching up and up. Call me crazy, but I thought J. Crew was a reasonably priced one-stop-shop for preppies. Guess I was wrong.

Today as I took my daily jaunt through FabSugar, I saw that I wasn't the only one who noticed the price jump. Apparently, J. Crew has come up with a branding tool for their increased prices which doubles as a reason to hike up those prices even more. They call it the J. Crew Collection.

With prices dancing in the upper hundreds to thousands, you may as well hit up a real designer. The collection covers all of the bases: dresses, separates jackets, shoes, handbags, and jewelry. J. Crew is serious about this collection, too. They are using high end fabrics, sourcing from the same companies that provide for Chanel and Vera Wang. They are even devoting an entire store to the collection, which will open in New York City this fall.

I have to admit what I have seen from collection I like, but I refuse to wear "designer" J. Crew. Call me a label whore, I don't care, but I would much rather dress from the Marc Jacobs Collection for only a few pennies more.

Tell me darling Dashers, would you wear the J. Crew Collection?
