The holy grail of hard drives
Now that digital cameras and digital music players have been popular for several years, people are beginning to need a place to store and back up all of their data. External hard drives are all the rage now, and they've become incredibly affordable. For the most part, though, these massive storage devices aren't very appealing to the stylish. That's where the LaCie Golden Disk comes in. This external hard drive is made of a gold-colored metal, and it's an "inspiring, luxurious design" according to their Web site that is certainly quite unique. The top panel has a wavy, liquid-like design, creating an interesting look for your desktop. It was designed by Ora-Ïto, who has also designed an ergonomic Louis Vuitton backpack. The drive has a 500 gigabyte capacity (yes, more than you'll ever need!) and is available for pre-order at $189, which is actually a decent price for what you're getting.

Hmmm...well, they can say this is a reasonable price for this drive, but here's what I see: a) It has only a USB 2.0 interface. No Firewire or eSATA. I don't care if it has a gold top, for $189.00 for a 500gb drive, I expect at least USB 2.0 and eSATA both. b) If I only want USB, I can pay between $90.00 to $120 and get an external drive without the gold top. c) Related to the above, I feel that people thus are paying about double what the drive is worth for that gold top. d) This is personal taste, but I find the gold top tacky. Even if I liked it, I'd not consider it worth about a third to half the cost of the enclosure.
Maybe this just proves I'm not the target audience for this, but give me a black or aluminum covered enclosure that has multiple choices of ports over that any day. Or I'll take an internal SATA 2 drive with double the cache (the drive in that one has a 8mb cache, not 16mb like many SATA2 drives do), buy an empty enclosure with at least USB 2.0 and eSATA ports and still spend less money..and have a better qualtity hard drive in the enclosure.
