It's official: the necktie is back!

I'll bet they have a dress code at your work, and I'll bet it's lame. Unless you work someplace stodgy, it's probably business casual, which means khakis, and polos, and khakis, and polos, and khakis, and polos into infinity. Bleh.

In response to the increasingly casual workplace, many guys are wearing neckties -- even though they don't have to.

But now that it's not required, it's a style statement -- at least, that's according to NY Times, which asserts that all the cool kids at ad agencies, art galleries, and hipster bars are bringing back the tie back big time.

But be careful which tie you choose. If you try to pull off the power tie of yore, you'll look like a douche bag. But if you try something more understated -- like, say, the Psycho Bunny tie I pointed out last week -- you'll look like a man's man who knows how to look good.

I liked the article and have seen the trend, but was totally turned off and offended by your reference to "douche bag"...i disliked it in the 70's and even more so now. Very unprofessional, Jonathon.

I have to agree with you, Suzy. An otherwise well-written article can be ruined by something in such poor taste. Jonathan made himself sound like a kid who's just been waiting for a chance to slip that phrase in somewhere.

With all the violence and robberies, it is not a good idea to wear a noose around your neck. Perhaps this is why many places did away with this collar.

I disagree with you completely. This article was totally lame. Men wearing Playboy psycho bunny ties would be fun at a party, but not in a work environment. Casual is fun, but weird is not.

I LOVE it, the clean look for men is back, FINALY.
there is nothing more polished than a man with a smart suit and a great tie. Why do women fuss so much and the men are slob's and slouches.
It is about time that clean is back.

The necktie was invented by the Marquis De Sade, the knot is a modified hangman's noose. Why do you think a lynch mob used to be called a necktie party?

#6 Donna,

Obviously you didn't look at the psycho bunny tie, otherwise you would know that it is not remotely related to the Playboy bunny. Pay attention.

Ties are another example of sexual discrimination and subjugation of the male. Plus they're uncomfortable and a waste of time and money. Why spend time figuring out what tie goes with what when you could be worrying about something truly important, like fly fishing?

Rivergeezer... I'm the first one to jump into the 'ol hip waders & make my flies dance across the river, but it's still fun to get dressed-up whenever an opportunity arises ....even if it's just a trip to the office. If we don't get it together, this population is going to continue to slide into the depths of the black hole, known as "W-Mart frump." Just a side note ... thinking of sexual subjugation kind of got me going... How delightful. I'll never look at a well-dressed man the same way again.
