Vogue to Hillary Clinton: "This is not Saudi Arabia"

Normally politics and fashion don't exactly go hand in hand. As far as I can tell, most candidates try and look as boring as possible -- probably so they seem respectable enough to get elected. That said, this year's Democratic presidential hopefuls are a stylish bunch -- Barack Obama appeared on the cover of Men's Vogue, and John Edwards is eerily obsessed with his hair.

Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, has stayed away from fashion magazines -- most notably backing out of a photo shoot with Vogue last fall. She was supposed to adorn the cover of the February issue, but opted against it at the last minute because she didn't want to "appear too feminine."

Anna Wintour, the highly-regarded fashion industry hard ass in charge of the magazine, isn't taking the snub lying down. In this month's editor's letter, she writes: "This is America, not Saudi Arabia. It's also 2008: Margaret Thatcher may have looked terrific in a blue power suit, but that was 20 years ago. I do think Americans have moved on from the power suit mentality..."

Maybe. Or maybe Anna is just blowing off steam. Somehow I suspect Mrs. Clinton's political analysts know more about campaign strategy than the editor of a fashion magazine. But what do you think? Would you vote for a woman who appeared on the cover of Vogue?

A few standout pieces we can't wait to get our hands on include cute Peter Pan-collared dresses, a fantastic leopard-print fur, and the ladylike bags used to accent several outfits.

Holy crap, of course I would! She's not doing herself any favors with
that "I don't want to appear too feminine" BS. Do I, as a fashion
photographer and stylist with a style blog of my own, want the only
female candidate to DISLIKE her feminine ways?

You know, feminine, um, BIOLOGICAL FEATURES and WILES?

Lordy. She just lost ever self-respecting woman's/feminist's vote.
For shaaaaaaame.

xoxo.

Oh, ple-e-a-s-e,
Just let the lady be her natural, normal self, dressing as she feels comfortably doing without having to prescribe to the fashion dictates of the style fascists.
I would think the opportune time for this fashion mag. opt would be IF she is elected president. Then we do not have to deal with all the pre-election dribble of those looking for anything to criticize and demean her. I can just hear the cawkings about a head of state being overly concerned with the superficialities of the fashionistas, not a relevant concern for a serious world leader. Why add to the heavy bombardment that is sure to come her way from the opposition.

Do you always criticize and comment upon people who have a preference in art? People who prefer fashion to politics (you've GOT to admit it's an art - because it is), Matisse to Boucher? Rococo to Dadaism?

Obviously since all the "superficialities of the fashionistas" can't possibly have the mental capacity to care about our next world leader, it makes perfect sense that we would get all up in arms about only what she wears (since that's clearly exactly what happened - excellent observation). And since Vogue (a STRICTLY fashion magazine, obviously you've read it) has something to say about her choice, clearly all of you "educated", "mature" political followers are so rightful to slap "us" down and put us in our place.

"Ple-a-s-e"...

Did you even read the damned thing?

xoxo.
