With Green House, Saks must think eco is chic

saks fifth avenue green houseIt must be official. Though I hadn't yet formed an opinion either way. a lot of people were saying that "eco" in fashion and style was a passing fancy. Like shoulder pads, leggings, and eelskin, eco is just another trend that would be hot for a while, but eventually die out.

Oh wait, leggings came back in a big way, and apparently, Saks is putting their money on eco. They now have a (sort of) permanent section on their online store called Green House, "the home of eco smart style." Structured just like the rest of the site, there are sections for women's apparel, accessories, beauty, and men. I'm guessing with this entire section dedicated to eco brands like Beau Soleil, Loomstate, and Organic, Saks thinks eco is worth it. Of course, we'll wait and see if they put a permanent link to it, instead of from a promo section on their front page.

I think this is a great idea. If a larger number of main stream stores start to support eco-fashion perhaps it will catch on in a big way. As long as it is real socially conscious/eco-responsible companies they are carrying, not just a load of green-washing to get attention. I have also found more and more small boutiques like http://www.junoandjove.com that offer entire inventories of eco-friendly clothing and accessories. When it is fashionable to do good for our planet I think we all win.

I also think its a great idea, just the prices are ridiculous. People like me wont be able to start wearing anything of this, so this attempt is almost fruitless.

Oh my goodness, look at those prices. Going green shouldn't cost that much green!

It's a great idea, but I think it's actually really sad that people need a fashion fad in order for them to be eco-friendly. It should be a way of life. It kind of upsets me because I have been so environmentally conscious my whole life and it's only recently that the media is supporting it. Like many fads, people today will be like, "The earth rocks! Go eco!" and tomorrow they won't care. Or they'll only care when it comes to fashion instead of in all ways of life. It's very hypocritical. Am I the only one who thinks this is sad??

these people make me sick. when a lot of things are already made from organic materials but not labeled as so (e.g. 100% cotton...its organic), they have to put an organic label on it and mark it up 100%. that's the problem with the world today, everybody is thrying to capitalize on everything. they really don't care about the environment. they could've been using hemp for an endless number of commercial and industrial uses (e.g. all types of clothing, plastics, fuel, medicine, PAPER, and whatever else can be thought of). paper is the big thing. much of the problems in the environment could be solved if they would just substitute hemp for wood in paper usage. corporations are good, but the people who run and work for most of them really, really, really suck. thank you and good night.
