Finding -- and Dressing -- Your Shape

1/31/2008 6:25PM by Bradley Bayou

There are occasions in every woman's life when she is on center stage – a wedding, a prom, an award show, or just a special dinner with someone they love. I help women look beautiful for these moments.

It's during these times that you are probably more critical of yourself then others are. But it is important that you feel your best and that you are comfortable, so you can be yourself and look great.

In this week's blog, I've chosen red carpet photos of celebrities who have put a lot of effort into feeling and looking their best. The question is, did they make the right choices?

I've chosen celebrities from each of the body types from my book "The Science of Sexy": inverted triangle, triangle, rectangle, and hourglass. Did they dress correctly for those body-types? Let's see:

INVERTED TRIANGLE: CAMERON DIAZ

An inverted triangle has pronounced shoulders and smaller hips. Cameron's dress is perfect for this body type. The strapless style shows her shoulders and defines her waist, but the key to this dress is that it releases into a full gown at the lower hip. This gives the illusion that her hips are proportionate to her broad shoulders, and the defined waist gives her an hourglass shape.

TRIANGLE: KELLY CLARKSON

The triangle (or pear shape) has smaller shoulders in proportion to her hips. The key is to bring out the shoulders and keep the waist defined to balance the hips. Kelly's dress is not a good example of what a triangle should wear. The narrow top draws the shoulders in, making them appear smaller, the waist is not defined, and the skirt does nothing to hide her hips. Kelly needs a wider strap to bring the shoulder out and define the waist. Ideally, the skirt should skim the hips and fall into an A-line.

RECTANGLE: QUEEN LATIFAH

The rectangle doesn't have a defined waist, so her dress should create a waistline. Latifah's dress looks great. The shoulder straps are set wide, which elongates the shoulder. The corseted middle brings in the waist, and the skirt falls loosely on her hips to create more volume. Latifah is accentuating her curves in the best possible way in a very dramatic dress.

HOURGLASS: OPRAH

This dress has all the important elements for looking great on an hourglass woman like Oprah. It creates a strong shoulder, defines the waist, and balances the top with a full skirt. However, the top of the gown is a bit too full. Oprah has very nice shoulders, and the amount of fabric here adds weight to her frame. The waist and skirt would be better if balanced with a top that defines the shoulders without using so much fabric.
