Perhaps Sharon has chosen the rat as her totem animal and is calling upon its ancient powers.

Totem animals were explained to me by this hip 20-something I knew when I was in high school. One day I mentioned that I was seeing a lot of turtles everywhere, and she said "oh, it has become your totem animal." She then explained that in Native American lore, every animal has a meaning, a power. Spiders represent or embody creativity, for example. Turtles are survivors; their power encourages you to get in touch with your primal essence.

Rats, according to www.sayahda.com, are resourceful, but they also "personify humankind's imperialistic drives."
