I have to admit that just typing the title of this post sort of sucked the wind out of me -- I cannot fathom making my own dress. Of course, I also hot-glued my apron for middle-school home ec (and got a B, thank you very much).

Anyway, if you or a loved one have a good deal of skill in the sewing room, and you have quite a while before your wedding, you could consider making your own dress. And, if you choose to make this a DIY project, you can shoot for the stars -- you get to choose your fabric, your pattern, your embellishments, everything!

Flaming Tulle had a post on this recently (Stephanie, the blogger, actually had a DIY dress herself, and it's beautiful!), and there is some great advice on where to go online to find the quality materials you undoubtedly desire. Also, I found this site with lots of advice on a multitude of DIY wedding projects.

However, I have to say just once more -- make sure you leave plenty of time, especially if the person making your gown isn't experienced in making formalwear. Your seamstress might be using a fabric with which she's less familiar, or you might want to make subtle changes as you go along (since you can do that, you know). Oh, and send AisleDash your pictures for our Flickr pool!
