I decided to take my youngest daughter shopping last week, and let me tell you it was an eye opening experience! She was looking for a dress, and after spending several hours walking through a major department store, we were still empty-handed.
Why couldn't we find anything that was figure flattering and still carried a trend?
Eventually we decided to grab anything that looked like it might have potential and head to the dressing room. Hours passed and still no keepers. I couldn't believe there wasn't anything in the store that worked on her petite figure. The large prints were overwhelming on her small frame, and the empire and A-line dresses made her look pregnant. We were both getting frustrated, so eventually she ended up settling on a shirt that was very full, but with a belt, it worked.
At the end of our day of shopping I had to ask myself: What is going on in fashion right now? Bright colors, big prints, ethnic jewelry, empire and A-lined dresses -- Where these clothes just made for runway? Are designers putting fashion before function?
My advice to shoppers right now is to pass on buying this season's unflattering silhouettes. Put your money in accessories and spruce up what you
already have in your closet. Never underestimate the power of accessories -- shoes, handbags, jackets, belts and jewelry. They can totally change the look and feel of an outfit. Great accessories can take a simple outfit from day to night, or make something old new again.
There are some great shoes out there right now, really innovative and fresh styles. Pair them with something you already own.
Another great item to pick up is a new jacket, but be sure to stay away from the cropped un-figure flattering ones -- go for a bright color instead. And if you absolutely cannot resist that oversized dress or blouse, pick up a new belt or corset to cinch in your waist and define your figure.
I am a firm believer in fit, any one who has picked up my book, "The Science of Sexy," knows this to be true. Every outfit should be built around a
silhouette that accentuates your assets and hides your flaws.
Build your closet around great basics that fit you perfectly and then add trendy piece -- this season it's accessories. For instance, take that simple black dress you wore with tight, jacket and scarf for winter and switch it up with bright jewelry and a wrap for the spring and summer. For the fall, add a belt and blazer.
Right now there are so many fun colorful options in jewelry and shoes and jackets and handbags. Find one that works for you! It may take some time, but you are worth the effort! There is nothing better than loving what you are wearing, and believe me, people will notice.e, people will notice.
