Most of the women I know spend lots of time caring for everyone else in their lives and often don't take the time to care for themselves -- this is a mistake. I propose all you girls out there take an afternoon and really get your closet ready for the summer.
Wouldn't it be great if your closet only held items that worked perfectly on you? If that were the case, you might spend less time getting ready in the morning, and you might even end up having a better day because you would feel more confident in what you are wearing -- now that's sexy!
It is my hope to inspire women to embrace who they are and use fashion to accentuate their assets and hide their flaws. Your closet is your best ally, and when used effectively it can help you accomplish your best dressed self every day.
So let's start fresh this season. I'm sure there have been plenty of days when you have opened your closet and thought, "I have nothing to wear!" This is only because all the clutter and all those items you just "couldn't live without" are obstructing your view of the really fabulous stuff you should be wearing.
Here are some basics to get you started.
KNOW YOUR SHAPE: The first step is to determine the shape of your unique silhouette. If you don't already know, my book "The Science of Sexy" can help you figure it out.
MAKE EVERY ITEM COUNT: Every item in your closet must be flattering for your specific body shape. Attached is a list of must-have basics; buy them in the silhouette best suited for your shape and wear them every day.
CHECK LIST: Grab a pen and go through this list of basics, checking off what you already have and what you might need to buy.
EDIT: Relentlessly attack your closet! And I mean relentlessly, eliminating all items that are not "perfect" for your shape. This includes those items you bought on sale that never quiet worked and things that do not fit you well. If you haven't worn it in a over year, let it go.
ALTER IT: Take all items that need altering to the tailor. I'm sure you have clothes you don't wear because they don't fit properly and you have put off getting them fixed... or worse, you're wearing them anyway! You are really doing yourself a disservice, for instance, by wearing pants that are too long -- you maybe adding weight to your bottom half, which can make you seem shorter and wider.
CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER: Why hold on to things that "almost" work? Come on -- you are better than that; focus on perfection. The more you eliminate, the more you'll to work with and, of course, the more room you will have for new items!
It may take awhile to complete your Dream Closet, depending on your budget and the time you have to shop.
Take your time and really look for perfection with each item you buy -- in fit and quality. This is not a task for a weekend or even a season. But once you have the basics, you will need only to add trend pieces, your closet will be efficient and effortless and you will never again open your closet and think "I have nothing to wear!"
