Tip of the day: DIY pedi
Okay so the best thing about an at home pedi is the fact that it is A) free and B) you don't have some stranger touching your embarrassing, unshaved legs. You might also be surprised how relaxing it is doing it yourself. Let's check it out.
- Fill a tub with warm water and dilute a bath soak into it. No bath soak, no problem. Raid your cabinet for a tablespoon of baking soda and olive or bath oils. Stick your tootsies in and chill out for 20 minutes.
- If you've ever been to a spa pedi, they usually do a second soak with sea salt. This helps loosen dead skin even more. You can either skip it or give it a go for another 10 – 15 minutes. When you're soak is over pat your feet dry with a towel. You can even stick it in the dryer for a few minutes so it's nice and warm.
- Apply a foot lotion so the rough skin doesn't stand a fighting chance at a comeback. Next use a file or pumice stone to remove all of the dead skin cells.
- Clean underneath your toenails and then give them a quick clip. Smooth and even them out with an emery board. When filing back and forth, be gentle or you risk splitting your nails.
- Next push back your cuticles with a special made cuticle stick. Do not clip them or force them because they can become infected or bleed easily.
- Now you can make it an even more spa like experience by applying lotion and then wrapping your feet in a warm, wet cloth again. This will help lotion really soak in and make your feet incredibly soft. Do so for about 5 minutes and then let them air dry before your start the next step.
- Now you're ready to polish. Be sure to apply a base coat to avoid yellowing nails. Apply the color coat next and then finish it off with a clear coat. To lengthen the color's life, apply the top coat every few days.
This is so easy to do when you're kickin it at home watching the tube. It will take about as long as a pedicure would at the salon but the best part is that you get to pocket the $50 as your own tip and spend it elsewhere. Nice!

Saving money is great when the results don't look cheap but this photo of the 3 feet - yuck. Those French pedis look really poorly done, like some little kid did them with cheap glitter polish and liquid paper. Plus, fat toes aren't very attractive, especially with toe rings and the long toenails as in the top right foot - yuck. What a horrible photo.
