Iranian fashion: bland, unattractive, and government-approved!

Sick of the immoral fashion industry invading your nation? Kick out that Western filth by showing your country's ladies how to look hot by covering up -- with a government-approved fashion show!

That's the plan according to Saffar Harandi, the Culture and Islamic Orientation Minister of Iran -- and apparently it's just as stupid as it sounds. Harandi was the driving force behind a first-of-its-kind fashion show for Iran, in which catwalk models ditched the traditional black for more colorful cover-ups. At first this sounds like a step in the right direction, but local critics weren't very impressed.

Imam-approved fashion in Iran

One of the show's photographers told the New York Post: "The music was awful, and the models were not professional models and not pretty enough for a fashion show," while another noted that "Iranian women...[are] much more fashionable than that in the street."

Not exactly high praise -- but that shouldn't be surprising. The "fashion" on display looked more like first generation Star Trek costumes than traditional Iranian outfits, and were unfortunately adorned in plaids and floral patterns.

Ugh.

The photographer that spoke with the NY Post should rot in hell. There are reasons photographers are BEHIND the camera! Couldn't he cut the fashion show and girls some slack considering where it was held and not to mention the lack of wardrobe choices for these women??? It's a milestone that they didn't have to cover up in black, couldn't he focus on that? What a jerk! I'm sure it wasn't easy shopping around for "professional" Iranian models to walk a catwalk...HELLO!?!

It was a she, by the way. And some of the clothing was really hideous. And Iranian women have more leeway in what they're allowed to wear than Saudi Arabian. And some of the clothes are really awful. A couple were pretty, as in, if I ever visited a country in which I was forced to cover myself, I'd wear them.

These styles will fit right in with Michelle Osama's vision of the white house if her messiah wins.

OMG---APPARENTLY THERE ARE PEOPLE LESS IN TOUCH WITH REALITY THAN OUR FEARLESS DECIDER PRESIDENT! ISLAM AND THE RULES FOR LADIES GARB ARE DESIGNED TO ROB WOMEN OF THEIR OWN IDENTITIES. WHAT ARE ISLAMIC MEN ANYWAY? LIKE ABUNCH OF DOGS WHO JUMP ANY WOMAN OVER THE AGE OF 5 WHO ISN'T COVERED HEAD TO TOE? THEY SHOULD FEEL INSULTED.

I am very glad I am not suppressed as these women are, but I still don't really care what other countries are doing. Our journalists should be concentrating on the fleesing of America.

WOW....what a step forward...colored tents to cover the ladies up with rather than that drab black. Do the men force them to shower in those things also?

I like to let the people who is saying men make the women dress like that are not right.. Women dress that way to show there modest. And just so you know not all muslim women dess like that. And the men don't tell them what to wear..

Modesty should have its own place in every decentwomen's life, that is different than a dictator to tell mainly women how to dress up. the fault of some Iranian women is that even with their Hejab( total cover) has not stop them to be moral, they thousands of out of wedluck preganacies and abortions that put any other westernized women to sham. Hejab has to come from inside a person as they respect their own body and the gift of womenhood. It was my saddest time to see IRanian women waring the most none modest cloths under those ugly covers and showing their bodies like a meat market in the parties. Do not misunderstand me, I do not agree with any kind of forces from parents nor the Goverments, but the teaching of parent with a correct principle will help women to establish a decency in them that will respect their body as a gift not as a merchandise item to sell. yes those cloths you see are ugly, but what they ware under that are most ugly when no modesty is involve. I am An American and have been in Iran and I know how wounderful that culture is, but because of confusion and battle they have with this Goverment the hypocrecy has become unlimite by both side. Morality must be in both outer and inner coverage. Maryam

No they don't shower in them.. They wear pants and tops at home. just like women do. They cover them self up when they go out to show there modestly. Also just so know women in islaim can't pray unless they wear a long dress like that and cover thir heads.. So it just easyer to dress that way when your out also...

rick and palm tree: of course you aren't anti-semitic---i could see that from your comments!

the basis of your problem is this pesty business of living in a FREE country---you would be ever so much more comfy in a clergy run government where no one has to make any of their own decisions.

..and the purpose of this oppressive treatment of women in those societies IS in fact to keep women down and with no real rights. As for Pakistan---it has a secular government--for now, which makes a difference in how women are treated.

Why don't you go live in one of those countries where women are beaten in the streets for wearing nail polish?

As an American Muslimah, I wouldn't wear the clothes they showed at the fashion show, but to say that the models weren't pretty enough?
Compared to who, drugged out skeletons on high fashion runways?!!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and here is mine, if you don't like what you see.. don't look. Please be respectful of others traditions if you expect them to do the same for you. Thats why non Muslim women get disrespected everyday because they display their goodies for all to see, leaving nothing to the imagination. In the Bible, the Torah and the Koran it tells women not to display themselves.

I would've approved of the clothing show if they took the garb off at the nd of the runway to show something else underneath.

1) Why are the outfits always in really heavy, winter fabrics like knits, etc????? ITS THE DESERT!!! ITS LIKE 110 degrees over there!!!! Are they trying to kill all the women with heatsroke? This is like Japanese feet-binding,if you ask me! USE LIGHTER FABRICS! IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE!!!!

2)Why dont they get Armani or some minimalist Japanese designers to design some of their outfits/coverup/chadors-whatever-you-call-them!!!!!! They COULD LOOK QUITE COOL if they use some CREATIVITY!
3)Why do the women have to ear such a f-g sad look on their faces? Thats what makes us westerners think they are unhappy and oppressed! Look at those f-g models! They all look like their favorite dogs just died! WTF? You cant tell me that the women over there never smile or crack a joke....most of em dont have to work outside the home...its western women that overwhelmed with their responsibilities and should be walking around looking exhausted and depressed....WTF????!!!!!!
4) Does anybody know that alot of the Iranian women are very fashionable and very european?? And that alot are walking around these days bleach-blonde ,getting nosejobs, and wearing Barbie-doll pinks and bright colors a-la- Paris Hilton??????!!!!

Come on, media, lets show the WHOLE TRUTH in the Middle East. Not just a SAD portrayal of the women......
