Is there a proper length for men's cutoffs?

8/7/2008 11:00AM by Josh Loposer

When you've got a pair of old jeans that have gone out of style, but you can't make yourself to throw them out -- there's still a way to breathe new life into them: turn them into shorts. You know, get after them with a pair of scissors just above the knee. At least, that's the way we thought that cutoffs were made.

Now that men's cutoffs are finding their way back into all sorts of fall collections, the cutting has apparently been done for you. Does that kill the whole über-casual, granola vibe for anybody else?

Don't get us wrong -- we love us some cut-off shorts. The fit is slimmer than with regular shorts, and somehow they look more comfy and more refined. It's just that buying a pair of pre-chopped designer cutoffs just seems like a waste. Is the sustainable clothing trend already over? Guess we can chalk it up to another fashion statement hijacked by savvy hipster retailers. Oh well, they still look cool.
