Fashion photographer Nick Knight has used two very powerful tools to express his disgust with the fashion industry for their blatant acceptance of racism and discrimination against black models -- guns, and Naomi Campbell.
By filming an online video of Naomi wearing Rodarte and shooting up the place, sprinkled with quotes about the race problem that still exists Nick makes a statement -- enough is enough!
In one of the messages that flashes across the screen, Nick says, "I am virtually never allowed to photograph black models for the magazines, fashion houses, cosmetic brands, perfume companies and advertising clients I work for. Whenever I ask to use a black model I am given excuses such as, 'Black models are not aspirational in some markets' or 'they do not reflect the brands values,' normally, however, no reason is given."
Another quote by Nick says, "If I judge by my own feelings, I can only guess the indignation, anger, rage and fury that black models must feel."
There is no sound during the entire short clip, but at the end when Naomi let's bullets fly you can feel her fury.
The success of the black issue of Italian Vogue was fantastic and has people talking, but talk is not enough. We all know the old saying, actions speak louder than blah blah blah. So let's hope advertisers and the media stop talking and do something! We want to see models of color in our magazines and selling us clothes -- bring on the glamazons of all skin colors -- we're ready (and have been ready) for diversity in the fashion world.
