8/20/2008 8:45AM by Mallory Whitfield

Finch Metal paper plane earringsWe love all of the amazing independent designers out there. In order to find out more about just what makes all of these creative types tick, we present to you an ongoing segment called Indie Designer Interviews.

We'd like to introduce you to Finch Metal, a line of handmade jewelry that manages to simultaneously embody a spirit of childlike whimsy and modern sensibility.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. I have a research background in community and developmental psychology, with an interest in how communities and social policies influence children and families. I continue to work on policy issues, but Finch Metal gives me a chance to play. I hope my jewelry reflects that playfulness.

As Finch Metal grows, I continue to promote community sustainability. I try to minimize environmental impact as much as possible by using recycled metal and socially and environmentally-responsible products. Additionally, a percentage of all shop proceeds are donated to charity. Each month, I rotate the charities receiving the proceeds. I spend a lot of time researching charities to get to know their programs, and have a particular interest in poverty alleviation. I select organizations that limit how much they spend on overhead, and instead, focus on getting resources and services to those in need.

Finch Metal pinwheel necklaceHow did you get started as a designer? I was working at a job with pretty grueling hours, and was very burnt out. I desperately needed a creative outlet, and switched to a job with more traditional work hours. This transition finally gave me the time and opportunity to get started

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? I'd advise aspiring designers to take well-informed risks. Sites like Etsy can give designers a chance to determine their market, test new designs, and reach customers. Etsy gave me a chance to start small and learn from many of the wonderful sellers. It is a wonderful place to take a risk

What inspires your work? I love the properties of metal and learning new things it can do when heated, folded, or hammered. Many of my pieces are inspired by children's playthings, but I also like experimenting with basic shapes for delicate, classic pieces.

Who are your favorite designers? I love Nanette Lepore and Catherine Malandrino.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I have a pair of burgundy patent leather kitten heels that I would wear everyday if I could. I've had to replace the heels twice already.

Where can people find your work? You can find my work on Etsy at www.finchmetal.etsy.com or through my website at www.finchmetal.com.
