Indie Designer Interviews: Ariel Telsa Designs

8/24/2008 4:40PM by Mallory Whitfield

Ariel Telsa Designs necklaceWe love all of the amazing independent designers out there. In order to find out more about just what makes all of these creative types tick, we present to you an ongoing segment called Indie Designer Interviews.

Today's interview is with jewelry designer Ashley Marcovitz of Ariel Telsa Designs. Ashley's designs are vintage-inspired, combining found objects and salvaged trinkets to create one-of-a-kind wonders.

Tell us a little about yourself and your work. My name is Ashley Marcovitz, and I'm a student at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. My current crafting passion is jewelry-making, although I love all kinds of crafts and switch from one to the other every so often. My style is old-fashioned and romantic. I work in an organic fashion; bits and pieces just spring into my hands as I work, I usually don't have a set idea when I get started. I love using vintage jewelry, pocket watch parts, and other found objects in my jewelry.

How did you get started as a designer? I've been crafting since I was a little kid, I really couldn't define the moment I became a "designer." I guess I got started with jewelry when I got my ears pierced at fifteen and was appalled at how much earrings cost, which is saying something as the kind I buy are usually pretty cheap. I just thought "Oh, I can do that," so I got some materials and started experimenting.

Ariel Telsa DesignsWhat inspires your work? I'm inspired the 1800s-type aesthetic of femininity and charm. I love draped chains and pearls, diamonds (although us poorer girls settle for rhinestones) and antique brass.

Who are your favorite designers? Even though I make jewelry, I love fashion and clothing. I love Betsey Johnson because she has such a unique viewpoint and she modernizes vintage styles, which is something I strive for with my jewelry. Give me one of her cocktail dresses and I might never take it off.

What are your top fashion & beauty must-haves? I honestly never leave the house without a large tote bag for a purse. There is nothing more useful or fashionable! While I am a big fan of clutches, you can't put purchases in one when you are shopping or sneak food into a movie. Tote bags are the clever (and sneaky) girl's best friend. And the bigger the print, the better.

Any advice you would give to aspiring designers? I would say, if you want to sell your work, you should just go for it. You can't sell what isn't for sale. I would also say, don't be ashamed of your work. If you like it, someone else will, even if you have to hunt to find the right market.

Where can people find your work? www.arieltelsa.etsy.com for jewelry.
