Sarah Palin 101

Back in 1996, Rage Against the Machine won a Grammy for rapping about what we'd felt for decades: "I want to be Jackie Onassis...I want to wear a pair of dark sunglasses...I want to be Jackie O..." Now everyone wants to be Sarah Palin. And from her Judy Jetson pouf to her Judy Garland peep-toes, Sarah Style is suddenly as hot as Camelot couture was two generations ago. How long will it last? It might help to remember that just a few months ago, American women were frantic for the $148 White House-Black Market dress Michelle Obama wore on "The View." But until this fad gives way to the next, here's a quick course in Palin 101.

You're likely not making the trip to Wasilla, Alaska, any time soon. But even if you could zip over to the Big W, it would be hard to snag an appointment at Beehive, the Barbie-pink salon that's been poufing Sarah Palin's bun-and-bangs for the last six years. What's a girl to do? You could bring a photo of Sarah's updo to your own hair haven... or think pretend-Palin. WigSalon.com owner Joe Aronesty told the Wall Street Journal that he's already sold a few dozen Sarah-lookalike wigs (formerly known as "the Raquel"). To replicate her style, try the $114 "Valentine" model, which comes in 24 colors and can be worn flowing or pinned back, or the $46 "bargain Sarah," also known as a "Flirt."

They may be the most politically-popular pair of glasses since FDR popped a pair of Pince-nez on his nose. We refer to Palin's $375 Kazuo Kawasakis -- series 704, in gray -- which are so hot that their manufacturer has had 9,000 new orders for the rimless specs in the last few weeks and is now churning them out 24 hours a day. Designer Kawasaki, for one, is thrilled. As he told AP this week, "I want to say, 'Thank you' to Ms. Palin."

For her acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, Palin opted for this silk shantung Valentino jacket tagged at $2,500 -- more than a week's salary for the $125,000-a-year gov. Campaign insiders told Page Six that the country's most famous Hockey Mom not only snapped up the piece at a Saks Fifth Avenue but she also had a bevvy of GOP stylists to spiff her up.

All that glitters is not gold, at least not on Palin, who's often spotted wearing beaded danglers. For authentic -- and inexpensive -- Alaskan jewelry check out AlaskaNativeArts.org, where beaded earrings sell for about $30 a pair.

They may have been designed for 20-something girls to go clubbing, but don't tell that to Palin, who wore Naughty Monkey's red peep-toe heels for her debut as McCain's running mate. The so-called "Double-Dare" pumps, with 3-1/2-inch heels and scribbed leather, are about $90 at Endless.com, Kaboodle.com and Amazon.com, and the company told the Wall Street Journal that sales have already spiked 50%. Indeed, the Journal reported that the company alerted retailers to the fact that Palin favored the pump by proclaiming, "I vote for Naughty Monkey!"

She may lob lipstick metaphors like grenades, but Palin isn't one to kiss-and-tell when it comes to what brand she uses. No matter. To copy her look, skip the slash-and-burn reds in favor of a creamy natural shade. And for those eager to make a more partisan statement, New Mexico company Alchemist's Apprentice has just added a Palin shade to its Alchemy of Colour line. (They even promise to donate $1 of every $20 tube to the McCain campaign.) The question is, can Palin do for "Power Pink" what Monica Lewinsky did for Club Monaco's "Glaze"?

Even if the closest you come to Denali is a Yukon SUV, a true warrior-princess demands outerwear as rugged as the great outdoors. For hunting and fishing, Palin's closet is filled with jackets from The North Face, like this (discontinued) turquoise-and-black model. The company's current line of Triclimate jackets range from $199 to $349.

Palin seems to be as fearless about pearls as she is about mooseburgers, donning them with everything from flowery suits to hunting jackets. Of course, you may have to skip a mortgage payment to finance the real thing -- at Mikimoto.com, an 18-inch strand starts at $2,600. Or you can opt for a simple string of freshwater pearls for $75 at Carolee.com, about the tab for a tankful of gas.

Power may produce its own glow, but one half of the GOP ticket -- the half who hasn't had skin cancer -- gets a little help. A spokesman for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities confirms that Palin had a tanning bed installed in the governor's mansion in Juneau shortly after she took office. The beds can cost up to $35,000 to install, but a tube of Jergen's Natural Glow self-tanner retails for under $8.
