Este lauder and Wal-Mart make nice - strange times

(Can they really go cheap? Click the photo to see some shockingly expensive designer products)

As the world of fashion reacts to the tanking economy, some high-end players are making bold new compromises partnerships in order to break into a recession-friendly lower price point. For example, in an attempt to scoop up some consumers that will be broke bargain shopping for the foreseeable future (like us), Esteé Lauder will be launching a trio of fragrances exclusively at the fashion hub that is Wal-Mart.

The new line will be sold under the name C-Thru, as in the bottles are transparent -- or as in 'wow, the economy must really suck for Esteé Lauder to make such a transparent attempt to reach out to Wal-Mart shoppers.' While the move is totally uncharacteristic for the historically highbrow cosmetics firm, launching a Wal-Mart line is probably one of their best chances to grow in these tough times.

Shockingly expensive designer products

  • Pricey teddy
  • $1600 designer laundry bag
  • The ugliest bag $52,000 can buy
  • $5,000 for a phone!

The C-Thru trio will consist of gem-inspired fragrances like Ruby, Purple Diamond, and Blue Opal. After their exclusive launch at Wal-Mart this December, EL's low-end fragrances will eventually be sold at other luxury stores such as Kohl's and Target. Weird.

Why is perfume so expensive? It seems to just sit on the shelves because it is so expensive. I try to wait until it goes on
sale. Of course, Estee Lauder and other department store
fragrances never go on sale.

Actually I wear an Estee Lauder fragrance and the stores do put them on sale on occasion. And at stores like Macys, there is usually a free gift with purchase as well.

There are several factors that go into perfume making and all can be pretty much broken down into materials, labour and science. The cheapest part of the whole process is actually the ingredients in the perfume. You have to extract the oils from the flowers and leaves that make up the scents, but the perfume is actually only 10-30% essence and the rest is basically rubbing alcohol. Any stronger and your skin would burn. Every perfume maker has one or more specialists whose sense of smell is necesary to come up with the essenses that will go into each scent. These are very handsomely paid individuals as only just under 100 are employed in Grasse, France.. the perfume capital of the world. But to cut a long story short, the most expensive part of the bottle of perfume you're buying for $100 is... the bottle. The packaging of perfume can account for over 60% of the cost.

Since when are Target and Kohl's considered "luxury" stores?

sarcasm. sarcasm! how do people not get this? just because it's in an article, they think it's meant to be taken verbatim.

this article is just commenting on the irony of a high-end name allowing its products to sell in stores like wal-mart and target. although target has a history of partnering with designers and product lines that consumers would be impressed with, such as isaac mizrahi.

wal-mart has no such history. instead, it aims to sell the cheapest products regardless of quality.

Why is perfume so expensive?
------------------------------------------
They have to spend all that time and money designing and getting a design patent for the bottles. Smell-alikes use "off-the-shelf" bottles, and have a correspondingly cheaper price.

Brianna if you think that walmart sells cheap products that have no quality, then don't shop there. I get so sick and tired of people talking crap about walmart, but then those same people shop there a couple of times a week. Go some where else and pay a higher price for that stores products that are the same as you would buy at walmart.

I would rather pay a few extra cents or dollars to ensure that americans keep their jobs, and my money doesnt go to some poor kid in china who is forced to work for a measly wage. But by all means you can continue to shop at Wal-Mart and contribute to the demise of this county, while your at it vote for McCain and really kick us when were down
