If you have curly hair, simple styling secrets could mean the difference between touch-worthy locks and a bad hair day. Learn how these curly-haired celebs go from hair-don't to hair-do, with all the essential tips you need to know from NYC hair guru Mark Garrison.

    Curl Don't: Meg Ryan

A harsh center part can zap all of the volume out of shorter hair styles; instead, part against your natural hair growth direction for more volume.

How to Get Short, Tousled Curls: Prep hair with a volumizing mousse and then shape a fun zig-zag part for even more volume. Define curls by wrapping sections around your fingers, then diffuse, dry and scrunch. Complete by spritzing a shine spray all over, says Garrison.

    Curl Don't: Minnie Driver

Blow-drying without a diffuser attachment blasts curls into frizzy, shapeless strands.

How To Get Classic, Medium Curls: Side-part your hair for more volume, then mix a serum and curl defining product together and apply. Lift small sections of your hair at a 90 degree angle from your head, and twist the curls around your finger. Finish by blow-drying with a diffuser from the bottom up, says Garrison.

    Curl Don't: Alicia Keys

Product is a curly girl's best friend; without a gel or cream, frizz takes control, causing curls to sop up the moisture in the air and lose definition.

How to Get a Thick, Volumized Mane: Apply a curling gel to hair and then spiral small sections tightly around medium sponge rollers. Apply heat until dry. After removing your curlers, carefully finger-brush hair to separate and define each curl, advises Garrison.

    Curl Don't: Sarah Jessica Parker

This Sex & The City star's trademark natural waves look boring and flat when not styled with a curling iron.

How to Get Loose, Sexy Waves: After quickly blow-drying smooth with a round brush, use a large one inch barrel curling iron on sections. Interchange the direction of each curl, suggests Garrison "Front sections should always be curled away from the face." Don't forget to spritz a medium hold hair spray afterwards to lock in your look.

    Curl Don't: Halle Berry

Applying too much product to your roots will weigh curls down to a shapeless mess; instead, concentrate product a few inches from the scalp and comb through to distribute evenly.
