Siwy Denim SS '09 preview

11/1/2008 12:01PM by Michael Cohen

Among the five billion jean companies out there, we like Siwy Denim for its classic take on fashion denim. Since 2005, designer Michelle Siwy (say: "seewee") has focused on natural washes and feminine cuts, earning a celeb following a la Kate, Sienna, Mischa, Kate, and Nicole. Usually, famous clientele is enough to make us run the other direction (celeb is the new hemorrhoid). But in the case of Siwy Denim, there's plenty of substance to the the style.

Earlier this week, we caught up with Michelle on the phone to preview what she's got lined up for SS '09.Siwy says, "I always wanted my line to be something you could wear for years as opposed to overly trendy and overly worked up." She traces her direction back to, "collecting jeans when I was really young. [It] gave me that appreciation for naturally aged denim." In the jean world, there's plenty of options for stone washes, enzyme washes and various finishing techniques. So much so, that it can be a genuine headache just to find a so-called "regular" pair.

The majority of denim from Siwy retails for under-$200. It's surely a fashion item but doesn't forsake real wear-ability. Produced domestically, Siwy's SS '09 range features a variety of cuts (each style has a woman's name like Camilla, Hanna, or Helena) including a super slim fit, a wide leg and several clever takes on the jean short. Notice some fraying and deconstructed tearing. But the natural washes are surely the standout, creating an overall mood that's so familiar, soft and comfortable, like that favorite pair of jeans that matches with just about anything.
