German Meteorologists Issue Frozen Piercings Alert

1/14/2009 9:00AM by Josh Loposer

Two pierced noses on smiling facesSure we all watch the weather this time of year to see which ridiculously insulated jacket to wear each day -- but what does this crazy cold weather have to do with body art? Apparently, the Meteorological Institute of Germany is warning those with piercings to leave the jewelry at home -- or else. Forget about minor superficial damage like that little hole in your nostril that will never quite close up. Thanks to -56°F temperatures in parts of Europe, you could lost the whole nose to frostbite.

OK, we're not exactly sure what kind of horrendous fate awaits those who wear a barbell in their eyebrow outdoors this week, but we can only imagine that the metal in the jewelry will reach temperature at least as cold as the outdoor air. That means a -56 degree piece of sterling silver in your skin. That's got to equal instantaneous frostbite, right?

In some hardcore body art circles -- where eyeball tattoos and split tongues are the bee's knees -- losing an eyebrow for your art might be considered cool, but we're pretty sure it wouldn't be good for your career as a model.
