Stories in both The NY Times and WWD scooped today's official announcement that NY Fashion Week will move from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center (at Damrosch Park), starting in 2010.
The story of how 7th on Sixth started New York Fashion Week, as told to us by Fern Mallis, Senior Vice President, IMG Fashion, goes something like this: During a Michael Kors fashion show (Michael Kors SS '09 is shown at right), bass heavy music caused ceiling debris to fall on editors and guests. It was the final straw in a series of similar snafus, typical of producing events at private venues or locations meant for other purposes. At that point, 7th on Sixth was established by The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to centralize catwalk activities.
At one time a non-profit organization, 7th on Sixth was bought by IMG in 2001 and continues to produce the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. There's 60+ designers showcasing FW '09 collections this month at Bryant Park and several hundred, smaller events around the city during Fashion Week. It will be especially interesting to see how the hundreds of off-site activities shift toward the new epicenter.
