The Return of the Baggy Pants?

Phillip Lim's olive baggy trousersA few weeks ago at the Grammys, Jay-Z showcased his ode against the knot-crushing restrictiveness of the skinny jean. Like usual, his deeply meaningful fashion commentary lead us into a long rant about the future of men's pants and that perhaps we're approaching the end of the skinny jeans era. Apparently, we're not alone in that opinion. The news coming out of London Fashion Week indicates that many designers are pushing styles with pleats and room for your bankroll.

That's right, it's the mid 80's again and we may be headed towards our own 21st century equivalent of parachute pants -- or maybe just less radically-tight pants. For supporting evidence, we have only to look at Kanye, who's sporting a very retro looking hairstyle (a mullet) and is comparing his style to Michael Jackson's. Mr. West, however, isn't wearing baggy jeans yet. Or, check out Phillip Lim's styles at Oak.

According to Brandish, all signs at London Fashion Week point to the fact that fashion may be experiencing a reaction against skinny jeans and a move towards a more balls-friendly direction in men's trousers. Aside from designers showing off wide leg styles, there seems to be a movement back towards the pleated pant -- something we thought hoped had died once and for all years ago.

  • Theyskens' Theory Runway at New York Fashion Week Fall 2011 Theyskens' Theory Runway at New York Fashion Week Fall 2011 Play Olivier Theyskens's capsule collection for Theory went somewhat against the grain - not at all a bad thing. While there were deliciously flared mustard corduroys, wide-leg palazzo pants, and the occasional supersexy maxidress, the majority of the collection focused on mini hemlines contrasted by must-have floor-length coats. The moody palette ranged from icy blues to stirring slate grays with dashes of deep wines and a pair of eye-catching red trouser pants.
  • Calvin Klein Fall 2012 Ready-To-Wear at New York Fashion Week Calvin Klein Fall 2012 Ready-To-Wear at New York Fashion Week Play Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa showed pieces that prove you can be sexy without showing off absolutely everything - the designer sent loose, hourglass-shaped frocks and pleated pants down the runway, sticking to a chic, sensible color palette of black and off-white with a few pops of red thrown in. The perfect wardrobe for working women - or the girl who wants to invest in one piece to wear forever - Costa's Fall collection was decidedly modern, with a hint of mystery and subtle seduction

We saw his usual floral prints, riding pants, and romantic dresses, as well as high necklines, embroidered lace, and neutrals like khaki and camel. With his anything goes styling, we especially loved his Navajo-inspired bags.

Her fall collection is very reminiscent of the ‘90's. The pieces are wearable and girly with a hint of grunge. Oversized cardis, floral separates, funky prints, ruffles and loose fitting pants ruled the runway.

As a man, I, personally, can't stand the whole skinny leg trend that happened in fashion. And, I've never thought it was an attractive look on men. However, I don't mind slim fit.

As far as pleated trousers go, they only just disappeared from the runways. However, they never disappeared in the real world and men still wear them.

Yeah, that`s what I say "bigballsneedroom" -
however you like to interpret this ..men like form follows function - so tight jean can also have a certain aspect...and I think our world is naturally rich of solutions but I like Baggies and I like to be loyal to myself whatever forecasts and fashion specialists say, or what do you think?
