The Return of the Baggy Pants?

2/25/2009 9:00AM by Josh Loposer

Phillip Lim's olive baggy trousersA few weeks ago at the Grammys, Jay-Z showcased his ode against the knot-crushing restrictiveness of the skinny jean. Like usual, his deeply meaningful fashion commentary lead us into a long rant about the future of men's pants and that perhaps we're approaching the end of the skinny jeans era. Apparently, we're not alone in that opinion. The news coming out of London Fashion Week indicates that many designers are pushing styles with pleats and room for your bankroll.

That's right, it's the mid 80's again and we may be headed towards our own 21st century equivalent of parachute pants -- or maybe just less radically-tight pants. For supporting evidence, we have only to look at Kanye, who's sporting a very retro looking hairstyle (a mullet) and is comparing his style to Michael Jackson's. Mr. West, however, isn't wearing baggy jeans yet. Or, check out Phillip Lim's styles at Oak.

According to Brandish, all signs at London Fashion Week point to the fact that fashion may be experiencing a reaction against skinny jeans and a move towards a more balls-friendly direction in men's trousers. Aside from designers showing off wide leg styles, there seems to be a movement back towards the pleated pant -- something we thought hoped had died once and for all years ago.
