Yesterday StyleList was part of a select group of editors that were invited to tour the new space and speak with Topshop's Managing Director Mary Homer about the store's move across the pond and future plans for the U.S.A.
StyleList: Why did you pick New York as the place to first bring Topshop to America?
Mary Homer: Why New York? Because it's one of the fashion capital cities of the world. Topshop translates very easily. New York girls and London girls, all English girls really, have a similar sort of dress code.
StyleList: Where will Topshop go next?
Mary Homer: We have a handful of cities that we would go to we could go to Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago. We'd do key cities rather than the outskirts.
StyleList: Will expanding to America impact the designs or aesthetic of Topshop?
Mary Homer: We'll see what the costumers think but we tried to stay very true to our brand. Everyone said to us just take Topshop London and move it to New York. We haven't wanted to try to be something we're not .
StyleList: What does Topshop offer that was missing from the American retail market?
Mary Homer: I wouldn't say things were missing but we help compliment what New York already has. We are very fashion focused and fashion forward. The creative store environment, the shopping environment, the style advisor service, we want to do the full package . It's that attention to every inch of the store and our Englishness!
StyleList: With the global expansion do you see yourself moving beyond English designers for the collaborations?
Mary Homer: I have been asked that quite a few times and I think it would be lovely. Once we are settled it would be great to pick up what is the equivalent of what is New Generation here and pickup and up and coming designers. Then we could take it to England as well!
