Fall Makeup is Channeling the 80s - In a Good Way

When MAC's Gordon Espinet talks, we listen. As the Vice President of Artistry at the cosmetics company, he is the trend maker when it comes to creating makeup looks for the fashion shows in NYC, Paris and Milan.

Espinet recently gave a preview of the trends to look for this fall (or now, if you want to get a jump start). "I drew inspiration from the late 70s/early 80s," he said. "But it's done in new and interesting ways." In other words, Espinet channeled the sexy 80s (think Debbie Harry) not the cheesy 80s (a la Boy George).

Lid Viscous: At Dsquared Espinet did black rimmed eyes that looked "imperfect but cool. Like a young Hollywood walk of shame." Get out your black eyeliner and start smudging, stat!

Who's That Girl?: Bold, matte lips done with precision rule for fall. At Emanuel Ungaro lips got a two-tone shot -- orange on top (try MAC Lipstick in Morange) and bright purple-y fuchsia on the bottom (MAC's Violetta is a pro secret). Call 800-367-6707 to order the latter.

New Romantics: Espinet loves a "soft, airbrushed effect with no obvious lines." Models at Matthew Williamson looked ethereal in cloudy gray eye shadow (go for MAC's Print) and light terra-cotta lips (MAC Lipstick in Half 'n Half is an earth girl essential).

I love how you describe this look as the "sexy 80s, not the cheesy 80s"! SO true! While the look is quite bold and daring, you wont look back on pictures of yourself in 20 years and be embarrassed by your makeup (hopefully). Love the smudged eyeliner look. Great post!
