Fashion may have gotten top billing at the CFDA Awards but I'm more interested in recognizing the most inspiring beauty on the red carpet.

Last night, it was the sooty, smoky eye. Kirsten Dunst, Heidi Klum, Ashley Olsen and Agyness Deyn were all working raccoon-like eye makeup.

Dunst and Klum took it to the highest level, with lots of heavy black liner in the inner rims (enough to make an ophthalmologist cry), while Olsen and Deyn went easier on the liner and complemented it with softer, subtle gradations of neutral shadow.

If you're looking for a super-dramatic, editorial-ish smoky eye, I highly recommend Too Faced Lava Gloss in Super Gloss Black. The creamy pencil ($16.50) blends like a dream and has a shiny (not powdery) finish, which is quite fashion-y. Think Carinne Roitfeld.
