Man Jailed in Dubai for Wearing Marc Jacobs T-Shirt

A Lebanese man visiting Dubai was jailed after wearing a Marc Jacobs T-shirt, reports The Telegraph. Dubai, known for its flourishing shopping scene, wasn't so much dismayed by the designer label, but what was on the tee -- Victoria Beckham, naked.

Raffi Nernekian's T-shirt was one in series that Jacobs designed in 2008 for a cancer awareness campaign. (Proceeds benefitted the NYU School of Medicine Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group.) Nernekian's shirt displayed Beckham, nude, with the words "Protect the skin you're in" covering her naughty bits.

According to the article, Nernekian was confronted by a Dubai resident at a local bakery; when Nernekian changed and returned to the establishment, the police were waiting for him. He was sentenced to one month in prison and will be deported from Dubai after his jail term has been completed.

We always heard that Dubai was serious about fashion, but we didn't think they were prison-sentence serious.

The month in jail was not for the picture on the T-shirt, it was for being too stupid to be allowed to run loose in Dubai. Anybody who doesn't realize that cultural standards differ regarding art deserves what they get when they violate those standards in another culture.

I think that a jail sentence is a bit absurd for a T shirt of a naked woman showing basically what would be seen in a bikini. BUT it is their country and their law and a visitor to a country must abide by the law of the land.

What I don't understand is how muslims can live in free countries with a whole different set of practices which is in direct conflict to what they believe. It's a double standard. If they truly followed their muslim beliefs they would not live in or travel to countries that did not follow their code of ethics and morality. Muslim men DO NOT shy away from looking at exposed women in other coutries, yet they require their women to dress covered up according to their particular set of beliefs. I could go on, but I believe (hopefully) that I have made my point.

40 years ago when I left the military I was offered a job working in this part of the world until the employer realized I was Jewish. That was the end of that. It's ok.
According to our "life standards" those people are the most backwards of any group on the planet, even more so than the Asians. Not only that, they are probably the dirtiest. I hate to go into public stores and be around them, cause even with our supply of water for bathing, they can't seem to find the soap or deodorant. Never understood why people like to smell like their camel?

Amizing isn't it how religious wack jobs from ALL religions that claim god "created man in his own image" have such a problem with the naked human form, whether in art or life.
Does this really get these freaks so sexed up that they are in fear of loseing their self control?

IN the fifties, in The USA he would have been arrested. We have come a long way and it has been downhill all the way. We have the liberals and tne democrats to thank for the moral decay of this country.

If they allow the t shirt to be sold in their shops, then it should not be against the law to wear it. On the other hand if such laws are on their books and enforced thusly, tourists should be made aware of it upon arrival in the nation. To jail someone for an unintentional act of which they had no way of knowing would break someone's law is unjust.

When I first read this I thought it was crazy for the man to go to jail over something so stupid. I agree he should have known when traveling to another country. But, we have many people in the U.S. that cant speak english and I have seen many women completly covered. I dont know how they can punish themselves wearing all that material in the heat! I sweat wearing a tang top and shorts. They wear what they want here...why cant he wear what he wants there? So what if they dont like it. I dont like what they wear either. I know .. I know ..free country right...Just send him back home where he belongs...he wasnt thinking...TAKE OFF THE SHEET!!!!!

Dubai is a muslim country. What do you expect?

I sympathize with anyone going to prison, especially outside of North America. That being said, one has to be careful of running afoul of the law in these countries. In the United States, there is a bad habit of excusing the actions of even the most violent criminals. That "enlightenment" has not come to the Islamic world. Don't let your fashion sense ruin your life.

Let's just face it. The women look like the camels they ride on! Why do you think they cover themselves from head to toe in that heat? They're just jealous that they can't look like that! Oh, and right on Dave! We go over there, they expect us to speak their language and observe their customs, yet when they come here...well we all know the answer to that when we call customer service!

Someone with screen name AZZ thanks liberals and democrats for the MORAL DECAY of this country. But let me remind you, as he reflected back to the 1950's when he would have been arrested here for the same tee shirt..that MCCARTHYISM was here....He was a coke snorting nazi....and all the so called republicans are now.....the ones coming out cheating, and perverting and doing all the things...they are attributing to the democrates.
we do not want to become the NAZIS.

Are you people really serious? I see more nudity and more risque clothing in US markets than this. You people think this is inappropriate to be worn in public? My God, what is this world coming to? I think some of you are moving backwards in time instead of forward. This is the 21st century. I see more than this on local TV. Some of you people need to get a frickin' life !!!

Your screen name is why, when I said listen up fools, I was right, you're obviously a Liberal and a lame one at that !

If a Tee shirt can possibly be illegal, it should say so in the instructions.... you probably know that, i'm sure you'll be the first one to sue someone over less than that
