Holy distraction!

Okay, ladies, we've got to issue a statement on this exposed-pocket trend, and Ashley Tisdale is just going to have to be the sartorial martyr.

The High School Musical star rocked a pair of denim cutoffs -- a summer style staple -- this weekend while performing at The Grove in Los Angeles. And even as micro as those shorts were, her look would've been perfectly fine if it weren't for the unfortunate flashing of those bright white pockets.

We've seen peek-a-boo flashes of pocket lining under the short-shorts of style icon Kate Moss, but Tisdale's version is so obvious it skews tacky -- not to mention the very un-rock-and-roll, never-been-worn quality of her pristine denim.

We'd get that her legs are super fit and sexy and that her shorts are super short without the extra two inches of fabric dangling down. So why not chop those pockets off?! Especially since we're pretty sure she's not actually planning (or able) to use them.

To see if other stars nailed or failed the summer look, check out the below pics.

Shorts: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

    Cutoffs: Bad
If you're young, cutoffs are the perfect summer shorts to wear to casual events like say, a basketball game, so where did Beyoncé go wrong? Her shoes! B's casual court-side style is a mismatch with her sky high Christian Louboutin peep toe heels.

    Cutoffs: Good
Nicole Richie is the queen of cutoffs. The expectant mom pairs hers perfectly with an oversized men's shirt and fringe booties. Bonus points for the hippie chic updo and trademark oversized shades.

    Casual Khakis: Bad
It's a simple rule but one broken surprisingly often, your shorts should always be longer than your shirt. Gwyneth Paltrow's missing bottoms are a major style foul committed by the normally chic star.

    Casual Khakis: Good
Julia Roberts looks calm, cool and collected in her relaxed beach look.

    Menswear: Bad
Kim Kardashian's menswear inspired ensemble is too tight and too busy. Rather than flattering her killer curves, the plaid short-shorts and the double breasted vest both add weight to her frame.

    Menswear: Good
Actress Zoe Saldana gets her boy's look right in both spirit and fit. If you're wearing a men's inspired short, pick a longer length and more relaxed cut to create just a hint of androgyny.

    Shorts with Heels: Bad
Note to Mariah Carey: crop tops are for kids! And so are mini shorts! And while we love a YSL Tribute, your yellow stilettos are the icing on your bad outfit cake.

    Shorts with Heels: Good
Natalie Portman keeps it classy at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Her shorts suit and stylish shoe is an office friendly look for warmer weather.

    Teens: Bad
This silky short-short and heels combo is too saucy for 15 year-old actress Dakota Fanning.

    Teens: Good
Miley Cyrus frequently falls prey to the same mistake Fanning made (dressing too old for her age), but the 16-year-old gets it just right with this mix of plaid, flats, and cuffed shorts.
