Sad, sad news -- 36-year-old fashion designer Tara Subkoff will be undergoing major brain surgery later this summer to remove a tumor. As reported by New York magazine, although the tumor is benign, if not removed it will be fatal in about two years.

Subkoff's edgy fashion line Imitation of Christ -- started with Matthew Demhave and trendsetter-pal Chloë Sevigny in 2000 -- pushed the industry in new directions with the launch of a reconstructed collection made completely of existing clothing.

Editors took notice and a new fashion darling was born. (They were green before it was trendy.)

Tara could need up to a year to recover from the surgery, during which time she will be unable to work. To help cover the enormous cost of the complex surgery, lengthy recovery care and the cost of running the business, friends have planned a silent auction art benefit for July 15.

If you would like to donate artwork or a monetary contribution to the benefit, please contact staff@artproductionfund.org. Checks can be made payable to NYFA (New York Foundation for the Arts) and sent to:

Art Production Fund
299 W. Houston Street
New York NY 10014

Our thoughts are with you, Tara!

I am a survivor , transventricular cranitomy, may 1995, recovery is as difficult as the surgery if not more so in that no one can know the pain you feel from a brain that itself feels no physical pain.I think my cognitive impairments make it impossible to fully explain this condition that is associated with many traumatic brain injuries.Dealing with becoming flustered with an impairment that may only be noticed by a neurologist can bring the darkest of depressions.I live with it. John feel free to e-mail me ohstops@aol.com

Heather D and Tara.... hang in there! My husband is almost at his 5th year of remission with a tumor that invaded his sinus cavity, brain, and wrapped around one eye. He was 42 with no symptoms other than what we thought was a sinus infection. The recovery from the 17 hour operation he had was hard...and the year of chemo and radiation after was hell. BUT, once he was finished with treatment, he began to very quickly regain his strength and appetite and was able to start back to work 3 weeks after his last chemo. He does not have any cognitive impairment. Today he is strong and healthy and doing everything he did before he got sick.

God Bless you Tara, you are lucky to have such good contacts to hold this silent auction !! I also have brain tumors, and mine are inoperatable. I have suffered in such pain for the last 6 years, and there is no doctor that can control my pain. Somedays I just wish it was over, but I have young daughters that need their mom. So, I struggle to stay here for as long as I can to get my daughters raised. Then my job will be done. I hope you get good medical care, and get your brain tumor out of there...and recover in a timely fashion.Good luck with the surgery, I will pray for you as I do know what you are going through.

how sad - no matter the money a person has it's never enough when a serious condition appears. and people wonder why people making 7 & 10 & 15 an hour can't buy health care packages - and it's getting worse--

Your misinformed, I sell health insurance, either she didn't have any or the money will go for running the company while she is out of work, Any health insurance policy has a maximum out of pocket expense you can incur, The maximum at the highest level is usually 15,000 dollars, That's the maximum she could possibly spend with insurance!!

My dad has a malignant glioblastoma multiforme brain tumor, stage 4. He just turned 59. He's in the hospital right now because he's started having seizures. They can't operate on it because it's in the language part of his brain and operating could leave him unable to communicate with anyone. So my heart and soul go out to this young lady. Hang in there. I'll pray that God guides those talented doctors' hands and helps bring you to a speedy recovery.

I am also 59 and I am almost 10 years from my diagnosis -- brain tumor. The surgeons wanted to cut but I chose radiation. (the fact of the matter is, that after surgery you will have to have radiation anyway). These tumors are very slow growing and they are all in difficult places if within the brain itself. I went to the U of Minnesota Hospitals and they had state of the art equipment. 10 years later, there must be even more advanced treatments. It is a laser that pinpoints the radiation in small amounts for weeks of treatments. Surgeons want to cut and advised me to go this route -- and the radiation people said the opposite. I was very confused, but chose the more conservative route..knowing I could always get surgery if this fails. I have attended my daughters wedding, the birth of two grandchildren, and feel great. Love Holly

JD, My father also had maglinant glioblastoma multiforme 30 years age when he was 55 yrs. old. They did operate but it didn't stop the growth - it gave us a little more time with him.
I'll pray for him - and you, his family. I've been there and you need them also.

Why must people fill these comment sections with crap about sex videos, fake dating websites and other junk? Isn't it about time AOL took some sort of stand on this or don't they give a damn about the postings? Oh, sorry, I forgot about whom I was writing. Of course they don't.

I report every one of them as a matter of reflex. They pop up on every board, regardless of subject, and frankly colon cleansing has nothing to do with current events, except for the individual being cleansed. I'd guess that it's pretty current for them, but I'd rather not discuss it with them.

The people who write sick comments and/or add some stupid website are called Trolls. They like to cause trouble and irritate other readers. They have no lives and crave attention - even negative attention! It's best to either report or ignore them/make no comment at all regarding their boorish behavior

JD, my wishes and prayers go to you as well. My father died from the same thing in 2004 despite surgeries, radiation and chemo. I hope whatever time he has left is filled with loving memories for you.

Just to let everyone know a benign brain tumour is not a death sentence.Yes it is a big operation but to these amazing neurosurgeons something they do every day and for them pretty routine. I had a large brain tumour removed nearly 17 years ago. I am perfect in every way and suffered no side effects whatsoever. I woke up after my 9 hour operation the same as if I had had my tonsils out only with a sore head! No confusion or problems of any kind. It is wonderful what these surgeons can do. I also know quite a few other people who have since gone through the same and who are also wonderfully well. When I was diagnosed I was so frightened.I thought it would be the end or at the very least change my life but it hasn't. Good luck Tara - you will be in good hands.
