Would You Shave Off Your Eyebrows in the Name of Fashion?

Behold! No eyebrows at Balenciaga Fall 2009. Photo: Karl Prouse, Catwalking/Getty Images

Eyebrows are currently creating quite a stir in the fashion and beauty industries. Or should we say the lack of eyebrows...

A small but undeniable trend is picking up steam -- that being the trend of bleaching or (gulp!) waxing eyebrows into oblivion.

The result? A very bizarre, androgynous alien creature completely void of expression. (But why doesn't it look weird on Whoopi Goldberg?)

It started on the Fall 2009 runways of Balenciaga and Prada (fashion and beauty editors were shocked that someone was able to convince the top models to bleach their brows), and then came Brazilian bombshell Adriana Lima as a brow-free Marilyn Manson-lookalike for the latest Givenchy campaign.

Now the August cover of Italian Vogue features model Kristen McMenamy, also sans brows. Edgy McMenamy has been sporting this look on and off since the early Nineties, making her the patron saint of fashion icons minus eyebrows. (Well, her and Queen Elizabeth I.)

A great question was posed in this article from the Daily Mail about whether or not the non-conformist trend will trickle down to the masses, like punk did in the 1970s.

I'm sure a few lovers of the avant garde will give it a go, but I don't see how anyone else in their right mind would want to embrace the look

The article goes on to explain how eyebrows are linked to sex appeal and pretty much every expression a human face can make, which is why people look so alien when brows are taken away. (Also check out the Daily Mail's gallery of celebrities with their eyebrows airbrushed away. It's hilarious!)

What's your take on the latest trend of eyebrow removal? Tell us in a comment!

Henrietta, bless your heart, you can try changing the size of your text by going under "View" and then clicking "Text Size" if you use Internet Explorer 7. I use IE 7, but there is an IE 8 that's even newer. Some AOL articles have the letter "A" in different sizes going from large to small at the beginning of the article. Hope this helps. Have a nice day!

Eye brows have the function of keeping dust and other particulate out of peoples eyes. They should be left alone.

You are so right. All hair on the human body has a reason. Nose hair, filters impurities from going into the body. I dont want to see any sticking out of anyones nose, but dont remove it completely. Eyebrows need to be there, at least a little bit of a brow. Someone mentioned women now shaving "everything" Pubic hair also serves a purpose, which is why we grow it when we develop into maturity. Clean up your area so we aren't seeing it at the beach or pool. No need to be 9 years old again.

Hi Carlin, Not being sarcastic, but I can't think of anything good that pubic hair does. Again, not trying to pick a fight like everyone does on line, but I have always wondered and thought maybe you have an answer. And those back door hairs? What good could they possibly do? Come to think of it, arm pit hair? Some of these areas just seem to me to be throw backs to a hairier age where we also had all our wisdom teeth.

Karen, (not being sarcastic either) a sensible-sounding theory I've always heard as to the purpose of pubic, armpit, and "back door" hair is that it's there to reduce friction when you move, such as when running, for example.

All body parts have a purpose. Pubic hair and armpit hairs are present to help diffuse natral odors into the air to stimulate the libido of the opposite sex.
Regarding Ms. Goldberg, she is not the spokesperson for all blacks; she and my sister have minimal brows, I have a lot. We American blacks have a lot of bloodlines. Native americans, Africans and asian people are generally not as hirsute as Europeans. Viva le differance!

I think your eye are the most sexiest part of a persons body . I think the no eyebrow look would be a little distracting when trying to figure out body language . I dont know it looks kind of spooky to me....

Whoopi Goldberg has been doing the no eyebrow thing for years, ever notice?

Whoopi has a picking disease called "Tric" Trichotillomania (TTM, also known as "Trichotillosis"[1]), or "trich" as it is commonly known, is an impulse control disorder or form of self-injury characterized by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, facial hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair, sometimes resulting in noticeable bald patches.[2]:645 Trichotillomania is classified in the DSM-IV as an impulse control disorder, but there are still questions about how it should be classified. It may seem, at times, to resemble a habit, an addiction, a tic disorder or an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Trichotillomania often begins during the individual's teenage years. Depression or stress can trigger the trich. Due to social implications the disorder is often unreported and it is difficult to predict accurately prevalence of trichotillomania; 2.5 million in the U.S. may have TTM, with a 1% prevalence rate

Whoopi does not have Trichotillomania. She addressed her lack of eyebrows on the show recently. She said, like many African Americans, her eyebrow hairs became ingrown and caused pimples and some minor pain. So she shaves them off to keep this from happening.

Yes, I have noticed and it looks creepy as hell. I still like Whoopy as an actress/ comedienne, but the lack of eyebrows just creeps me out!

I don't know why Whoopie Goldberg does not have eyebrows, but I do know that shaving is the worst thing for ingrown hairs. Shaving creates a sharp tip on the hair, and will make the possibility that the hair will grow back ingrown even higher. That is why many African American men, who have issues with ingrown facial hair, grow beards. What is recommended for ingrown hair problems is grow it out, and trim close to, but not next the skin.

What do women have against body hair? It's getting to the point where they are shaving everything. I guess that's great if your dating a pedophile, but there are some places (including eyebrows) that just don't look right without at least SOME hair. As a guy, I'm all for shaved legs and armpits, but the rest just needs a little maintenance.

Well, the "No Eyebrow" look is pretty disturbing, but as for the area below the belt, I'd say that is a personal opinion. I really don't see what purpose it serves, and to be quite honest, some things are better experienced without a lot of "fluff" in between. Just being honest.

S'truth! How much longer must men endure the bald look? And stubble. Stubble and zits. Those tiny swim suits must have something to do with it. Women are not demure about displaying yards of skin, but they don't dare let a random hair show - unless it's growing from the top of the skull, which is not only okay, but mandatory. Stupid.

My hope is that when the fad is finally over, the pendulum will swing to luxurious locks.

I'm leaving this one for the models. They can get away with extreme changes because of their look and their profession. If I walked into work and sat down with a family ready to enroll into the school, they would think I escaped from the mental institution. Just like facial piercings, this is going to take a while to settle in with society. Although I personally don't think it will go that far.

I'm a natural blonde and have always preferred the "pale and Nordic pure" look of no eyebrows. When younger I made up my eyes with shadows and a little mascara.

Now that I'm "older" I can no longer wear the eye makeups due to "saggy" lids (need eyelid surgery) so have had to start wearing a little eyebrow pencil so my face doesn't "float away".

All in all, I love the eyebrowless look on very light blondes.

And by the way, what does "Androgynous:" mean?
