Lindsay Lohan landed the cover of September's British ELLE and the pictures are stunning.

The starlet rocks all black, including studded leggings, thigh-high boots and a sexy YSL bustier.

While Lohan is said to be a pro in front of the camera, she had the crew waiting 12 hours for the shoot to begin after the 23-year-old decided to make a pit stop in Paris en route to the London photo studio.

This is the same studio and photo shoot that jewelry went missing from -- the Westminster police have yet to make any arrests.

Once Lohan's photo shoot was in the bag, writer Katie Mulloy tried in vain to get a formal interview with the "Freaky Friday" star.

Instead, Mulloy pulls off a revealing profile through a night of club hopping with Lohan. A night that ended at Bungalow 8 where the actress ran into on-again, off-again girlfriend Samantha Ronson, and left in tears.

Mulloy writes: It took only seconds for Lindsay to approach and then flee from Sam but, whatever was said, she is devastated. It does not matter that we're in the middle of a bar, that I'm a journalist who she barely knows, that Sam is still in the same room, Lindsay cannot stop the tears. She can barely speak.

Lohan admitted that her favorite song at the moment is the heartbreak hit "Release Me" by Agnes Carlsson, which includes the telling lyrics: "I know it's wrong/ So why am I with you now/I say release me/'Cause I'm not able to convince myself/That I'm better off without you."

During the ELLE shoot, Lohan alternated between playing with her Blackberry, smoking Parliaments on the balcony, nibbling on a piece of pepperoni pizza and messing around with her iPod playlist.

Soon, Sam is walking towards the exit. Lindsay tries to speak to her. Sam pauses, words are exchanged, and then she carries on. You want to stop Lindsay, beg her not to do this to herself. Sam pulls free and strides away.

Lindsay is sobbing again. Minutes later, Lindsay decides to leave. She says it will be easier if she goes alone, that she will send a car back for Magali [Lohan's assistant] and me and we'll meet back at her hotel.

Earlier in the evening, in a club at which Lohan was making a paid appearance, Mulloy spied the actress journaling, explaining: At one point, she'd disappeared alone with only her journal; a black notebook in which she scribbles down all her thoughts and feelings on a daily basis. She had returned 10 minutes later, gripping it triumphantly and nodding knowingly towards Magali. I'd asked what it meant. 'She's got it out. It's done with,' shrugged Magali.

The only semblance of a formal interview granted to British ELLE was via email after Lohan returned to Los Angeles:

ELLE: What do you want to achieve in the next year?

Lindsay Lohan: "I would really like to get involved in a meaningful non-profit organization and put a lot of my energy into giving back! I have also started my own production company, Unforgettable Entertainment."

ELLE: You were going to tell us about meetings you had while you were in Europe. Have they developed into anything concrete? Can you tell us more?

LL: "It's top secret!"

ELLE: What are your main lessons of the past few years?

LL: "Say 'no comment.'"

ELLE: The press still wants to portray you as a party girl. Is this fair?

LL: "The press refuses to recognize or acknowledge the real me."
