Writer Kinda Apologizes for Fat Remarks in Scathing JCPenney Article

Writer Cintra Wilson is apologizing for weight references she made in a New York Times review of JCPenney. Photo: Douglas C. Pizac, AP

Style scribe Cintra Wilson didn't tiptoe around her severe aversion to JCPenney in today's Critical Shopper column in The New York Times.

"Why would this dowdy Middle American entity waddle into Midtown in its big old shorts and flip-flops..." she wrote, going on to rip on the company's "knockoffs," copious amounts of polyester and even the font used in the company's logo.

But what really caused public outrage was the writer's commentary on how the clothes are all geared toward fat people. Wilson, a size 2, writes that it took her a long time to find her svelte size on the store's racks.

"To this end, it has the most obese mannequins I have ever seen," she continues. "They probably need special insulin-based epoxy injections just to make their limbs stay on. It's like a headless wax museum devoted entirely to the cast of 'Roseanne.'"

Cue the hate mail, and then Wilson's sort-of apology. Here's what's currently posted on Wilson's blog:

"I very much regret that my JC Penney article in the Times caused any wounded feelings whatsoever, particularly to people who already feel they take more than their share of abuse from our very shallow and ridiculous society. I was not sensitive enough to this, and the extent to which my article exacerbated these feelings is a very real failure on my end for which I sincerely apologize."

And also: "... You know I didn't mean it that way, so please remove the knot from your panties and when you're ready, join me for a cigarette and several Pucker martinis at the insouciant end of the pool ..."

Signed? "Insensitively yours."

Do you consider this a sincere apology? And could this spur more fashion-related semi-apologies, perhaps from the likes of Karl Lagerfeld?

Lets all be very careful about what we say. Freedom of speech doesnt exist any more. One has to tiptoe around and think of every individual before commenting on anything for fear some extremely sensitive person may get their feelings hurt. Heres an idea, lets all get together and burn the bill of rights afterall if it isnt the government taking them away its a few sensitive individuals doing so.If your seriously overweight stop eating so much and perhaps exercise. Metabolism is a hard sell when you pile your plate high three times a day [ ever notice the size of ppl at a buffet]? Funny how we are a country full of cowards being taken advantage of in so many ways by the gov and anyone else who wants to whine and cry about whatever. Took my two young boys to a movie once and was forced to explain why it was perfectly normal for two grown men to kiss and make out right there in front of everybody. Now I have to condone seriously overweight ppl as persons who cant help it while they stuff their faces with two fried chickens. WTF????????????????????? At least no ones feelings are hurt

Listen the average size for a women is a size 14, not a size 2, sorry that one store doesn't decide to accommodate to you!
Oh and they have average clothing, well good, the workplace isn't the run way! So thanks for you terrible insit, go eat a whooper and have a nice day! :)

Wow! So, JCPenney has clothing for normal sized women and not anorexic sticks? Those bastards! They have some nerve not catering to the sickeningly thin crowd! Now where are people like Courney Love supposed to go to buy clothes? Oh, yeah, AT EVERY OTHER FREAKING BOUTIQUE IN AMERICA!

Nastiness whether about size 2 or size 22 is unnecessary. So the clothing at JC Penny was not to the critic's taste. The ugly statements were unnecessary. While I hold no animus, I must say the apology was not particularly acceptable or even an apology. Let's all decide to treat each other with respect. Incivility has become a trait of the people of the United States and that is unacceptable.

The truth hurts doesn't it people? I agree totally with the lady. I have an athletic body requiring smaller clothes and trim or athletic cut shirts. All you can find in that stupid store are box shirts, low rid pants made to fit anyone with a beer gut, and cheap olyester which should NEVER be worn unless you are 300#'s plus and can't afford cotton. There's a reason this country is the worlds fattest and now JC Penny is trying to focus on that market. Thank goodness the fashion industry has resisted the urge.

Kevin you are right! I'm a size 4 and I work hard for it. I love it, and feel great. By no means am I anorexic either. It's called eating right and staying active. I shop for my size the only places I can find it...those in the fashion industry. JC Penney DOES cater mostly to the larger crowd. Hey, someone has to do it...

...what a bunch of obese humorless American women...this country is full of them...I bet you all ride around on scooters at theme parks and your local Walmart...I suppose you all need handicap parking permits as well, take up more than your fair share of space on this planet and then complain about how unfair the rest of humanity is towards your french fry eating voluminous asses. Great...just great. F*** heads.

Brilliant, hillarious article! We thought it was so funny that we read it aloud at the dinner table. It was also right-on. I made one visit to JC Penny and will never return. Henrietta

One- who cares about her? Who is she anyway? Never heard of her...
Two- She crude and boorish, exactly the sort of apology one can expect from her sort of person
Three- See what size she'd be if she gave up smoking (now THAT would be interesting)
Four- As far as being fat is concerned Marilyn Monroe was the size you (whomever you are) consider fat
Five- She's probably jealous of curves she will NEVER possess

What a skinny biotch? Who is she to judge? I was a size 2 and I absolutly hated it. I recently had a baby and am a size 8 and I feel soo much better about myself. I would see a girl with curves and think damn I wish I had a body like that. People come in all different shapes and sizes, but when it comes down to it it's whats on the inside that really counts. This woman has an ugly soul, and you can't cover that up with all the size 2 jeans in the world. As far a JC PENNY goes, I shopped there when I was a size 2, and I shop there now that I'm a size 8. I love their clothes. If that makes me unfashionable OH WELL. I don't have to live up to anybody's standards but my own.

Another commentary of which proves that long after looks fade with age, a persons personality, intelligence and compassion are what counts for happiness, wiseness and peace..... of which obviously this author has or will have none of.

Tiny sized people don't realize how hard it really is to find clothes that look good on "bigger" people. Do you think it is fun to always have to go to the "plus" size department? I know I am big and it is my fault, but a person who is suppose to be a "professional" shouldn't make remarks like that.

Obesity is the ONLY discrimination that is still attacked. Fat people are still the joke around town, why? If it was any other model black, blue or red, as long as it was skinny it wouldn't even be noticed. Ms Wilson, eat a cookie and shut up!!!

Ms. Wilson's Nightmare

Ms. Wilson,

You are sick! Go get some vitamins, girl. Size 2? Excuse me, but that is not normal. So how do you expect a store where the designs are simply made for normal people to carry an abundance of clothes for the skinny anorexic sick kind?

I must say your apology sucks, you're not just insensitive (I can be insensitive as well as you can tell), you're also ridiculous.

You can't pretend you're the average and should even be thankful that you can at least find something made for you.

If you have so much problem buying clothes at a particular store (and look! I didn't mention a store name), go buy clothes somewhere else or have your clothes altered. I'm sure with the job you have money should not be a problem.

So go and spend that extra dollar at your local dry cleaning and SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM!

Oh, and for one more thing, stop being so self-centered. The world doesn't twirl around you, baby.

Yes she has a right to speak her mind. Her opinion means as mush to most of us as the price of trash bags. Just remember opinions are like a certin body part, everyone had one. For me, JCP is a great store for all. Who ever heard of this clown anyway?

What is the matter with this writer? I am a size 2 and have no problem finding nice clothes at JC Penney. Doesn't her boss at NYT read this stuff before it goes into the paper? She is nasty and discriminates..she should be sued along with the NYT for allowing her to hurt millions of people and a fine retailer. Disgusting...by the way..I don't smoke or starve..just genetics.
