Rachel Roy's urban-edged collections have been a favorite of the fashion industry's since she launched in 2005. (Her fans include everyone from Michelle Obama to Oprah to Lucy Liu.)

While her eponymous collection can be found at high end department stores such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Nordstrom, the designer recently created a diffusion line that is currently flying off the shelves exclusively at Macy's. Here she explains the impetus behind the new Rachel Rachel Roy collection.

StyleList: Why was it important for you to do this line at this time?

Rachel Roy: I have always wanted to design a collection of affordable priced clothing. Jones Apparel Group approached me and together we decided that there was an opening in the market for the younger sister to the Rachel Roy collection which is how the Rachel Rachel Roy collection was born.

SL: Do you have a different approach when creating this line as opposed to your namesake line?

RR: Yes. The Rachel Rachel Roy collection is the younger sister to the Rachel Roy collection so it is quite easy to put on a different hat and design for the younger customer. There are 12 deliveries as opposed to the four deliveries that I do for the designer collection. She is younger and a bit edgy and I can push her a bit in areas that I can't for the Rachel Roy customer.

SL: What are some of your favorite pieces in the RRR collection?

RR: Some of my favorite pieces are the white T-shirt with chain detail, the jumpsuit, the cropped bomber jacket, and the plain jersey tees for their great fit.

SL: The response has been overwhelming positive; are you excited to reach a new customer base?

RR: Absolutely, I've wanted to design affordable clothing with a great sensibility ever since I got into design.

SL: How did you decide to partner with Macy's?

RR: Macy's was able to offer the support that was needed to grow the business and really get behind the collection.

SL: Do you have any funny anecdotal bits about creating this collection?

RR: I have a huge crush on Terry Lundgren [Chairman, President, and CEO of Macy's] and have always wanted to work really closely with him and that dream has been fulfilled ... just joking!
