From boom to bust, HBO is going inside New York City's garment district for the latest fashion documentary. Photo: Stan Honda, AFP/Getty Images

First, there was "Valentino: The Last Emperor," now, "The September Issue" -- clearly, fashion documentaries are the vogue thing to do.

Next up, film and television heavyweight HBO -- known more for its over-the-top take on NYC fashionistas in "Sex and the City" -- is showing the gritty side of glam by going behind-the-scenes of New York City's garment district.

Sure, we've had glimpses of the garment district from reality shows like "Project Runway," but rest assured HBO's documentary cleverly titled "Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags" will be keepin' it real. ("Schmatta" is Yiddish for rags.)

Starting with the history of the neighborhood, director Marc Levin, traces New York City's rag trade from it's boomtown past to the present, where most of the production has moved abroad.

Levin tells WWD, "'Fashion, and the culture of consumption, and shopping have been so much a part of who we are that this will hopefully be a way of looking in the mirror and reevalutating, 'How do we look?'"

The film will hit the Toronto Film Festival on September 14 before airing on HBO's regular pay cable channel in October.
