Fashion will take on the recession with some colorful optimism when it comes to spring 2010.

The Pantone Fashion Color Report, released today, shows that black is out, while soft shades of violet, turquoise, yellow and pink are in.

"Now more than ever, women are vigilant when it comes to spending," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. "Instead of reinventing their wardrobe at the start of each season, consumers want pieces to complement what they already own. Pairing a bold color with a basic piece or freshening up their look with bright accents addresses the need for practicality, as well as fun."

So, the top 10 colors we'll be seeing at New York Fashion Week, starting today?
  • Turquoise -- Pantone 15-5519 (vibrant blue-green)
  • Tomato Purée -- Pantone 18-1661 (classic red)
  • Fusion Coral -- Pantone 16-1543 (warm orange)
  • Violet -- Pantone 16-3320 (light purplish hue)
  • Tuscany -- Pantone 16-1219 (warm beige)
  • Aurora -- Pantone 12-0642 (slightly greenish yellow)
  • Amparo Blue -- Pantone 18-3945 (a warmer navy)
  • Pink Champagne -- Pantone 12-1107 (delicate pale neutral)
  • Dried Herb -- Pantone 17-0627 (green neutral)
  • Eucalyptus -- Pantone 15-0513 (practical gray)
Pantone also rounded up designer's must-haves for spring. Click through the gallery to see a sampling.

    Violet
Alice Temperley says she took inspiration from circuses of the '20s and '30s for her Temperley London spring 2010 collection. "The combination of a cool and fiery palette of bright violet, ice blue, fuchsia and chilli against black and white captures the 'circus' theme perfectly," she says.

    Pantone Fashion Color Report

    Tuscany
Catherine Malandrino will use this warm beige in her spring collection. She says she was inspired by geographical areas, including South Africa, the Sahara Desert and South America.

    Pantone Fashion Color Report

    Aurora
This slightly greenish yellow is used in a sketch by Reem Acra. She says a combination of colors, florals and print patterns equal a fresh look for her spring collection.

    Amparo Blue
Tommy Hilfiger's sketch shows this dark blue hue. Hilfiger says he was inspired by the California coastline and that he's using sea colors in his spring collection.

    Pink Champagne
Andy & Debb use this neutral pink in their spring 2010 collection. They say a dusty sky blue looks new with beige and pink.

Carmen Marc Valvo says his inspiration for spring 2010 came from "New York -- the ultimate urban jungle." This green neutral is used in a sketch for a dress from his upcoming collection.
