The streets of New York felt a little bit like Halloween last night or maybe a really, really good Saturday night back in the golden boom days of 1999 -- giggling girls teetering in high heels; champagne literally flowing freely; nary an empty cab in sight and traffic gridlock even at 10:30 pm. And did we mention celebrities?

It was Fashion's Night Out, and it seems pretty clear a really good time was had by all. Cheers to that!

But the question on everyone's mind is: Was anyone buying much? More than 800 stores in New York alone kept their doors open until 11 p.m., many with special events, cocktails and celebrity guests. Similar events on a smaller scale took place in major cities around the world.

While the fete was designed to put some fun back into shopping during a blah economic period, it was also supposed to inspire people to open their wallets. No word on an overall tally this morning, though the city's tourism agency says it is working on gathering data.

We definitely saw people with smallish shopping bags, especially when a store offered something new and special, such as Chanel's new Jade shade, which our Beauty Editor Laura Kenney is flashing on her digits everywhere today.

Rachel Roy's pop-up store was also going gangbusters, says Assistant Editor Dana Oliver, who is delighted with the purple, Monet-painting-like trench coat adorned with a bow and fold-down, funnel-neck collar.

One thing that we noticed everywhere were the commemorative T-shirts. Even Anna Wintour -- usually in pretty dresses that have labels other than "Hanes" -- donned one for her visit to Macy's in Queens.

We can't say we are a fan of her very skinny arms -- please eat some more! But Fashion's Night Out was her idea, so we'll focus on the positive and thank her for a fabulous night on the town.
