Getting Purse-onal - Luggage and Handbag Cakes, a Tasty Trend

Last month, when I married my college sweetheart, I couldn't help but make the event, well, purse-onal.
Instead of a traditional round three-tiered wedding cake, we opted for a luggage-shaped confection. Handbags would have been too much; it was a wedding not a Sweet Sixteen! Luggage, on the other hand, is needed for the honeymoon by both parties. (My husband isn't exactly a "murse" guy.)
The fondant luggage cake (right) was created by New Jersey-based Palermo Bakery and inspired by vintage MCM, Louis Vuitton and Goyard travel pieces that I found.. As you can imagine, I was quite specific with the shapes, hardware and "leather" texture, but I'd like to think I wasn't a "bridezilla."
While I was certainly an extremely picky customer, I'm just one of many brides who turn to accessories for wedding cake inspiration.
Joanne Bruno, the bakery's owner, sat down with me to discuss this growing affinity for bags in the bakery.
Pamela Pekerman: How many luggage cakes do you make?
Joanne Bruno: It's becoming a big trend. We do two or three a month, for sure. It's popular for bridal showers, not just weddings. People are really into the luggage thing!
PP: What about handbag cakes?
JB: Those are even more popular than luggage, but not usually as a wedding option. I would say that after wedding cake orders, a handbag-shaped cake is our number style. For birthdays, showers, Bat Mitzvahs, handbags are the thing.
PP: Do you find customers prefer logos on the cakes or just the shape of luggage/bags?
JB: When it comes to weddings, it's more about the overall shape and design aspect. It's the idea of a specific silhouette, finished off with classic drapery matching the dress or colors of the wedding. Logos, on the other hand, are more for anniversaries, birthdays or showers. In fact, sometimes I'll have a women come in with a specific bag that she wants replicated into a cake. It's wild!
PP: Which brands and logos do people ask for the most?
JB: Louis Vuitton is by far the number one request. We also have done Hermes, lots of Gucci, Coach and Juicy Couture. But, LV is the one that all the women love.
Hopefully, that's the only baggage a couple is bringing to the table.
