Glamour's Naked 'Plus-Sized' Models

Plus-sized beauties go au naturel for Glamour's November issue. Photo: Matthias Vriens-McGrath for Glamour

A month ago, we reported on Glamour's efforts to push the boundaries of accepted beauty norms with a photo shoot for its November issue featuring all plus-sized models -- in the buff.

And now, the picture we've all been waiting for: seven plus-size knockouts -- Crystal Renn, Lizzie Miller, Amy Lemons, Ashley Graham, Kate Dillon, Anansa Sims and Jennie Runk -- all showing off what their mamas gave them.

In the article accompanying the photograph (and yes, all the models actually ate the catered food at the shoot!), Glamour writer Genevieve Field discusses the fashion industry's obsession with weight, explaining that any model over a size 6 is often considered plus-size because she's too big for the designer samples that typically run from a size 0-4.

Field also talks about the stigma associated with high-end designers producing garments over size 12, giving kudos to Michael by Michael Kors, Baby Phat and Isaac Mizrahi for Liz Clairborne -- all brands that embrace size 14 and above.

We heart Scarlett Johansson, Glamour's November cover girl. Photo courtesy of Glamour.

As Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive writes on her blog, the staff is completely behind the push for a "body image revolution," which will include a commitment "to featuring a greater range of body types in our pages," she writes, "including in fashion and beauty stories (traditionally the toughest areas for even the top 'plus-size' models to crack)."

It seems even the stunning Scarlett Johansson, who appears on Glamour's November cover, has been slightly upstaged by the bevy of beauties wearing even less than the sans pants actress/singer. And that takes a lot! Pick up the November issue to get your Johansson fix.

Glamour's readers were torn between this new agenda to see more women like themselves in magazines versus the more idealized skinny versions. Where do you stand?

Weigh in, no pun intended, with a comment below.

Plus, read about Glamour model Crystal Renn's struggle with an eating disorder before becoming a plus-size model in our StyleList exclusive.

Read ALL of these reviews and look at the polls and anyone, including any SMART fashion magazine, will see that if they feature an even mix of "model-types" and "plus-sized" women (or men), or even just an increase in the amount of "plus-sized" models featured in the mag there will be more people looking at it. If fashion was featuring more plus-sized women and men it would be more appealing and universal to all. Whatever SMART magazines (like glamour) will reap the benefits of selling more and dominating the fashion publications by introducing a more appealing product overall. If you want men to start reading fashion magazines, start putting a lot more plus-sized fashion in them. ASAP!

What's with all the worry/judgment/competition? Our bodies are only a fraction of who we really are... look into your own eyes and really see yourself. Your fears will melt and you'll begin see the soul's of others - fat or thin.

They say right in the article: "any model over a size 6 is often considered plus-size because she's too big for the designer samples that typically run from a size 0-4." This is a far cry from what is considered plus-size in clothing!

I like to see some designing talent that can design clothing for all types
Did you ever walk into a store to buy clothing and they do have cute clothing
for the smaller person, but you get to the larger sizes and there is nothing.
Why can't they aleast make what is the smaller sizes in larger sizes also.
Hate to say clothing people but your missing out on alot of untapped sales
dollars, Why?!! Cause we got money in our pockets to spend, and your not
giving us anything to get excited enough to buy.

They look fine to me. I just was not aware that these images are what were considered plus size. Just because you a bigger than emaciated, does not mean you are plus size. It is called healthy.

I am fairly thin by my communities standard. I'm 5'10 and 150 - narrow hips, small behind, thin arms. As a matter of fact, the only curves I have are my ample busts and my great calfs. In the African-American comminity my shape is considered thin. However, in the retail world, I am large. Even though I shop for pants in the Misses dept. to make sure they dont slide off my hips - I am still considered big. I grew up with robust sisters. Beautiful, vibrant, shapely girls who should never have suffered one indignity for their size. But they were teased for being "large". I was teased for being "Olive Oil". Nobody can really make up their mind - but people judge anyway. Funny - I never remember entering a contest.
Are we all really that shallow? Who decides what size is norm -the average American Women is NOT a size 2 or 4? Why do we take it? If food was not good, we would not frequent the resturant. If a car was not a value we would not patronize the dealership that sells the brand. Why the heck do we keep supporting the designers who give our girls complexes and make most American women cringe with low self esteem as soon as we enter a department store.
My sisters are amazing beauties. I am an icredible alternative. The "plus" women in the Glamour shoot are goddesses. To hell with Ralph Lauren and any other designer who has such a blatant disregard for the female form they are supposed to be in awe of. What fakes. They can't make art for the real world so they try to make the real world conform to their inability to see US.

On the whole, I would rather look at a "Plus-Size" model than the stick thin type, we usually see on the runway. However, I think people need to think about height in proportion to size. I say this because my sister-in-law is 5'11" (6 inches taller than I am) and when I first met her, she was a size 4... I was convinced she wore a smaller pants size than I did, until she put on a pair of my pants that were way too big and they fit her perfectly. When you're really tall, you appear thinner. I am far from stick thin, I have a chest, hips, and a butt... but I'm only a size 2, but I am a healthy weight for my height and build. We need to focus less on size and more on what is healthy and looks healthy on ourselves!

Oh. I get it. The models are considered plus-sized because their ribs aren't showing and they don't look starved. Ugh! Compared to these "plus-sizers", I'm morbidly obese! And that gets me because I'm really not fat. I'm healthy. I have a pudge. I'm still working off baby fat from a few months ago so of course I'm not a stick, and to be honest, I never was. I see super models popping out babies and being a size 1 in less than 6 weeks. Is that healthy? Of course it's not! It should take as much time to lose the skin and weight as it did to put it on so I'm insulted that society holds me responsible getting back to pre-baby shape in less than 2 months. I was looking for motivation to keep me working out but all this site did was make me feel like I needed to set unrealistic goals.

Finally. It's about time the fashion industry starts to portray a healthier image to our daughters and all women.

I agree - these women are beautiful. People who can't see beauty in women of all sizes and colors are blind. I am hoping for a day when my teenage daughter doesn't think that because she's NOT a size 0 (she's a size 5) she's "fat". Heck my beautiful, willowy daughter is almost "plus" sized by some standards. Get real. THANK you Glamour (and Dove, for that matter) for showing the beauty of ALL women and helping us love ourselves again.

sorry, but to put someone who is overweight on the cover as a picture of physical beauty is bizarre. THEN to have all of you indicate that because the average woman weighs more than they do, the weight gain they are carrying is totally fine and understandable is even more bizarre.

I understand that it is hard to keep your weight healthy, and I understand in this culture with 24 hr fastfood and preprocessed meals it's even harder just to maintain good weight, let alone LOSE weight. But putting a person who is overweight on the cover and saying they're beautiful simply because the average woman in this country complains that the models don't reflect the average woman is giving up on trying to get women everywhere to reduce their weight.

Americans are LAZY and ego-centric. They do not want to work for anything. All this picture does is reinforce the belief of american's that being overweight and out of shape and unhealthy is okay. See even the fashion industry says it's beautiful to be overweight and unhealthy.

You don't have to be a size 0 or even a size 6. But if you have fat rolls and are out of breath simply from clibing the stairs, then you are NOT HEALTHY.
