Turns out, the commercials were right: you actually can get salon-worthy hair with the best drugstore hairstyling products.

At least, that's what TotalBeauty.com readers say about these gels, serums, hairsprays and mousses. All of them gave gorgeous 'dos -- without breaking the bank.

The best hair spray - and #2 ranked product overall - is Alberto VO5 Extreme Style, Max Hold, $3.49.

According to Total Beauty readers: "Boy does it hold the style perfectly," and "It holds my hair all day and isn't sticky or stiff. Very natural. And you can't beat the price."

But what's the top rated drugstore product? Here's a hint: "It removes frizz without making your hair feel greasy."

Top 13 Drugstore Hairstyling Products

Turns out, the commercials were right: you actually can get salon-worthy hair with the best drugstore hairstyling products. At least, that's what TotalBeauty.com readers say about these gels, serums, hairsprays and mousses. All of them gave our readers gorgeous 'dos -- without breaking the bank.

    TotalBeauty

No. 13: Herbal Essences Shimmery Nights Shimmer Spray Gel, $6.29

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9

Why it's great: "If you want hair that glows and shimmers all night long, making your friends jealous, this is the perfect product," readers say. In addition to the "pretty sparkles," readers also say this "has just enough hold to keep a style set and prevent wisps, but isn't nasty-sticky or anything." Another plus: "This product smells good and doesn't destroy my hairstyle when adding a little extra sparkle. This works like a shine and smoothing spray gel. Perfect!"

    TotalBeauty

No. 12: Finesse Curl Defining Mousse, $3.79

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.1

Why it's great: Readers say this mousse "does control my hair well with a soft feel to it." They also "really like the smell too." One reader says, "I have wavy hair so this mousse helps to maintain what curl I have for the whole day without feeling heavy on my hair."

    TotalBeauty

    No. 11: Frizz-Ease Thermal Protection Serum, $8.99

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.2

Why it's great: Readers say, "it's a miracle when heat styling!" Why? "I can make a blow out last for days with this stuff! It makes blow drying a breeze, and leaves a nice sheen on your hair without weighing it down," one reader says. Another adds, "I can use as much as I want of it and it's never oily feeling ... I swear my hair dryness and damage has improved greatly since I've been using this!" And as a bonus: "It is also great for scrunching. Even though it has no holding power, it still makes nice beachy waves," one reader says.

    TotalBeauty

No. 10: Pantene Pro-V Mousse, Extra Fullness Thickening, Maximum Hold, $4.49

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.2

Why it's great: "If you have baby fine and thin hair, this is the product for you," readers say. "Lightweight and non-tacky, it helps pump up that hair and enhances your ability to style however you want without that 'looks good now but give it five minutes and it won't' problem." Another plus, "It has great hold without the crispy hair issue," one reader says. To sum up, it's "very light weight and isn't sticky, smells good and is really affordable," readers say.

    TotalBeauty

No. 9: Neutrogena Triple Moisture Smooth Shine Anti Frizz Cream, $4.79

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.3

Why it's great: This really works readers say, it "makes my hair smooth, clean smelling, and [it's] definitely moisturizing." It also "holds up well to humidity in Florida" and "helps my colored hair stay soft and healthy looking with a great shine," one reader says.

    TotalBeauty

No. 8: L'Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Hairspray, $14.99

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.3

Why it's great: One reader describes this as "a magic wand for your hair" because it "holds, shines and protects. You can brush through it over and over again and it still holds." Others agree, adding, "This is a miracle spray that holds your style, but allows you to move it and play with it, and it will stay however you leave it -- all while leaving a satin finish on your hair."

    TotalBeauty

No. 7: Dove Flexible Hold Aerosol Hairspray with Natural Movement, $4.99

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.4

Why it's great: "It does live up to the 'flexible hold' and 'natural movement' part," readers say. "I didn't experience any super stiffness or flakiness from this hairspray," one reader says. And another adds, "At the end of the day, my hair was still bouncy and full of life and the best part was not feeling that grip of hardened glue on my hair. This sets any style without affecting the shape or condition of the hair." Bonus: "I actually like the scent of this hairspray," one reader says.

    TotalBeauty

No. 6: Suave Professionals Healthy Curls Enhancing Spray Gel, $3.89

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.6

Why it's great: "Suave has perfected spray gel [with] this product," one reader raves. Another reader agrees, "Suave gives my hair the bounce and lift of my natural curls and my hair still feels soft." And readers agree that it's "not sticky at all" and "enhances your curls and doesn't make your hair too wet or crunchy."

    TotalBeauty

No. 5: TreSemme Tres Spray Super Hold Hairspray, $3.49

    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 9.7

Why it's great: One reader explains: "This spray provides unbelievable hold for even my thick, coarse, heavy hair. The best thing about it is that you can comb through it whenever you like and there is NO stickiness." Others agree, adding, "this product is my savior for hot and humid climates" and "this spray does not leave your hair hard, it leaves it soft and manageable!"

One of my FAVORITE drugstore hair products comes in a gold can. The name of the product is FREEZE IT MEGA HAIR SPRAY. This spray holds my hair all day and actually leaves it super shiny!!! I have bought even more expensive hairsprays but found that this one is much better and a lot cheaper. I buy this hairspray at Walgreens but they also have them at Walmart.
